Guys do any of you have any experience with this rifle? How did it fit and how well does it shoot with this smaller barrel? any feedback would be appreciated.
I have not shot it with a high powered scope, but with my scout scope I can easily hit deer sized targets out to 300 yards. With my SS I get groups of 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards. I know this is not great, but it is with a 2x scope. I am sure I could do much better with higher magnification.
I believe Dick Metcalf did a review of Ruger short bbls in shooting times a few last summer. He got some unbelievable groups. You might try a search for it.
Arkansas, we got a few of the Ruger M77MKII Hawkeye rifles in tonight at the shop. These have full wraparound checkering on the stock and an improved trigger. The checkering is nice. The trigger is great compared to a standard M77; it broke very crisply and cleanly with no creep. For the improved trigger alone I'd suggest spending a few bucks more on the Hawkeye variant.
I love mine, I have built up a nice load for it and it shoots better than I can.
I do have a pretty cheap scope on it, (Bushnell Sportview), but it has been holding up well.
For the type of hunting here in Pennsylvania (lots of scrub and brush in my area) it is perfect in my opinion, I rarely take or even get a shot at anything over 100 yards.
The shorter length, makes it ideal as a "brush gun" and it is lighter to boot.
