Looking at the 10/22’s @Spats McGee and @CraigC have got me hankering for a target-specific 10/22 to go along with my standard carbine and RSI models.

After looking around and pricing a self-build, I realized that I wasn”t too hip on going gonzo on the cost. I decided on a Ruger factory offering, the Davidsons Distributing 10/22 Target, as the factory offering was going to run the same, or less, than piecing one together. Sportsman's Warehouse had them for $560, so I bought it online, had it shipped to the nearest store and did the 10-day wait.

I must say it looks pretty cool, with the black/stainless look, and the laminated target stock fits me perfectly. The 16”-ish bull barrel is a fluted stainless/black with a threaded muzzle. The manual said not to shoot CCI Stingers because the match chamber isn’t compatible with the longer case that round uses. (I don’t know if its a true match, Bentz or other style of chamber, but threads on other sites say its “a match chamber”.)

The BX trigger had no creep and broke nicely at 2 lb 1 oz for 5 pulls. (Not a fan of dry firing rimfires, even if Ruger says it is ok.)

I bought a Burris 4.5x14x42 mm scope and mounted it with a Monstrum rail/pro rings. They’re not high end, but they are plenty sturdy for .22 use and the comb puts my eye right in line with no issue.

I did a quick clean/lube and took it to the indoor range to test function. The gun was 10/22 reliable with Remington/Eley Target, Sellier & Bellot Club and CCI Standard Velocity. Using a simple front rest it kept 5 shots of each in one hole, but since my local range maxes out at about 16-17 yards this isn’t much of a test. Shots were centered but low (as expected), once I can get back to the 50 / 100 yard range I will properly sight it in.

(Of course the trip was marred by a pair of yahoo’s two lanes over shooting an AR, at a silhouette target literally 5 yards distant. Clown #1 managed to somehow shoot several shots into the roof while aiming at the silhouettes head. After a few more errant shots they knocked out their target line and jammed up the works. I got pissed at their ineptitude and quickly packed up before they carelessly put a bullet into my son or I. :fire:)

Despite the knotheads, my son and I had a good time trying this thing out. Thanks for lighting the fuse guys, I’m looking forward to getting it to the range where i can shoot at distance. One the scope is dialed in, hopefully I will be putting shots at 50 and 100 yds close to where they should go. :D

Stay safe.

That is a beauty! I am a big fan of the 10/22 and have a couple of different kinds. It looks like you set that one up right and I bet it is going to shoot awesome. I have not played with the BX 25 trigger yet, but I guess I am going to have to try one out. That trigger pull weight is just about perfect.

Sorry about your range day being ruined. I can completely relate though. I did my first CCW class through and organization that process 40-50 people in a batch. When it came time to shoot, I was horrified to find out that several people could barely hit a B27 full sized target at 3 yards. I was not even sure how this was possible, but they managed to completely miss several times. Besides that, there was lots of unsafe gun handling. I quickly qualified and got the heck out of there.

It is no fun when folks are dangerous!

Anyways it looks like you are on the right path with the 10/22 and I look forward to seeing how it groups.

Ya, a good day overall. :D But I have been to too many shooting scenes, and I just didn’t want to see another one if these guys kept up their incompetence. So it was time to go and return another day. (I guess these two got 86’ed from coming back, which is good.)

I know there are an extremely wide range of skill levels out there: some folks are Jr Michuleks putting holes in the 10 rings and others couldn’t put a bullet through the middle of a Michelin tire. Hopefully the less skilled work to become proficient, but do so in a safe and responsible manner.

These hangars are replaced weekly, sometimes more often. The AR guys were hitting the roof near the back of the range, with not only little pieces of drywall being sent flying but sparks were visible as metal in the roof was being struck. (When I mentioned seeing sparks, I was told they have metal guards over electrical and sprinkler lines, as well as angled plating to keep stray bullets within the building.)

Even the private, and expensive, range I visit has holes in the shelter roofs, bullet strikes on containers separating the rifle ranges, etc. Stuff happens sometimes when people are involved. I’m hoping to get back out there soon to see how this shoots at rifle distances.

Stay safe.

When I built both my 10/22's Ruger offered nothing like yours. They did have a target gun but the internet chatter was they weren't as accurate as what you could build so I went the build route. There is a vast difference between the two but I did save money by building my stocks and doing everything myself. I finally put a BX trigger in the ultra light weight one and it's pretty good but certainly doesn't compare with the Kidd trigger I used for the other. Considering the price difference it shouldn't.

Same here built mine waaay back before the tricked out offerings.Good luck with your new toy.Looks great.

I bet that is a shooter and for what you're doing is probably the best option. I have the same version as Spats McGhee. It is the most accurate 10/22 I've ever owned or shot and I wanted something a little lighter to use for squirrel hunting and at the range.

I have had two of the factory built target models and didn’t feel that they performed in line with their price. I built my own using a stock receiver, a Jard trigger group, a fiber buffer, a no droop barrel clamp and a ERShaw barrel with the Bentz chamber. Free floated. Next to my 455 Varmint it is my best 22 since I sold my Remington 37.
The Ruger target models weren’t bad but had an annoying habit of throwing the first round out of the group. Not first of the day, first out of the mag.
I’m sure the newer ones are better. Mine was about fifteen years ago.

I will look for that when I get out to the bigger range next Friday morning. (One kid has a dance competition today through sunday.)

Stay safe.

Looks good. It'ss shoot well when you find something it likes.

I built a 10/22 last year. Set a budget and exceeded it :) I like it a lot but it is a lot heavier than I anticipated. I'm thinking I want to do another with everything I learned from this one LOL :)
