My brother came over and I wanted to show him my new Ruger LCP. He went to dry-fire the gun with a snap cap and nothing happened. The hammer came back as the trigger moved, but the hammer never dropped.

I took the gun apart (slide, spring, barrel) but didn't touch the trigger group. I put the gun back together and tried dry-firing it again. I had to squeeze the trigger further back than normal and the hammer dropped when the rear of the trigger was pressed up against the frame! I racked the slide and tried again: same results. I racked the slide and tried again: the hammer wouldn't drop.

Should I just call Ruger? Any suggestions?

About the gun: three weeks old, 200 rounds of CCI and Remington UMC down the pipe without issues, dry-fired fewer than twelve times.

I would call Ruger. Mine has been 100%, but unfortunately it's still possible to get a lemon. Could happen with any brand for that matter, but Ruger is cranking these LCPs out due to the high demand so it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few lemons out there.

Have you tried it with ammo at a suitable range? Have you put 200 rounds through it?

Operating an auto by hand does not guarantee the action will cycle correctly. A good example is racking the slide upside down with a magazine of snap caps. It's almost guaranteed you get a FTF because gravity gets to affect the round much longer than the normal split seconds of typical reaction. Some firearms are even sensitive to even being held sideways - gangsta movies notwithstanding.

The LCP requires racking the slide to initially set the trigger mechanism, it's not exactly DAO like a revolver. In the first instance, it may not have been set. After that, things kept balling up.

The Ruger also seems to come shipped with a coating of heavy assembly oil. Most, if not all of it, should be completely cleaned out to prevent it being a cause of malfunction. Trigger links and sears cannot operate correctly when "stiction" from excessive lube hampers their movement. Common armory practice is to lube only the parts that bear on each other. The rest is left dry, which is still a lot, as you can't wipe it all off without solvents.

If it won't properly cycle the action with live ammo, you have a problem. Hand cycling cannot be relied on as an absolute check of proper functioning.

That's all very true but you need to re-read his post, this is a different problem.

It's goona have to go back. have Ruger issue a pre-paid pickup when you call them. They will do that "if you ask". Be nice when you phone talk to them, it will get u alot further to.

Have you fired the gun yet? Like a newborn, little Rugers need a spank to get them breathing.........maybe. :)

I just edited my original post to show the history of the gun. I will be giving Ruger a call on Monday. (Crossing fingers for mailer.)

Now you get to share the joy us Keltec owners have had for years!

In fact, if you sent it to Keltec instead of Ruger, I'm sure they could take care of you.

Broke LCP after 18 rounds

Hi, I just called Ruger about My LCP that I just purchased 9-09-08 from the LGS ! Trigger failed to reset after only 18 rounds ! I talked with Lisa at Ruger and was told they would send a mailer and once it arrived it would take 3 to 5 weeks to return ??????? I asked Her if Ruger was NUTS ! 3 to 5 weeks to repair a gun that was just test fired 9-4-08 By Prescott King and has only had 18 rounds threw it !! I told Her to let Me speak to Her supervisor because this was not acceptable for a brand new defensive only pistol ! She puts Me on hold ( professionally and politetly I might add ) on My dime ( but now I see why Ruger has no 800 # ) and when She comes back she tells Me Her Super was going to try for 2 weeks. I told Her if thats the best You can do I guess I will have to settle for it, but if it's not back in 2 weeks REFUND My money. I'll let You know how it turns out ! ...Later Leo

Seems I read that exact post on another gun forum, or could that even be on two other gun forums. Have you missed any yet. There is AR-15, THR, Glock talk, Ruger forum, elsiepea. 1911 forum.

Update

I called Ruger this afternoon. Ruger is sending me a mailer for the gun and promised a 1-3 week turnaround. I didn't have to beg for a short turnaround time or a mailer; the company even offered to fax, email, or mail me the prepaid UPS sticker. I think things are going well--so far.
