Took my new NRA Mark II out for a second range session today. I put 350 rounds through the pistol with 2 malfunction early on. Both were failures to extract of a type that I’ve not experienced before with any other pistol. The spent casing gets caught in the closed bolt with another live round partially in the chamber. I have to drop the magazine and retract the bolt & both the spent casing and the live round drop out through the mag well. I also had this type of malfunction once during my first range session. I’m really not concerned as malfunctions have been infrequent & the pistol seems to be otherwise reliable. I only have about 700 rounds through the gun, but I am curious as to whether this sounds like a extractor issue or a cheap bulk ammo issue. Do other Mark II users experience this type of malfunction? In general I’m very happy with the pistol & would recommend it to anyone considering a Ruger 22.

Thanks for the response. I cleaned the exposed parts of the extractor prior to going to the range, but I have not taken the extractor out of the pistol. Do you know a good source of info for extractor removal.

Sounds like an ejection problem, not an extraction problem.

If your extractor wasn't working I would expect to hear that the empty was still chambered or at least partially chambered. Sounds like the extractor is pulling the shell out fine but when it ejects, it's not getting clear of the gun.

I've seen this problem when the case being extracted touches the top of the mag. But it doesn't touch the front of the mag...it touches the mag half way back...where the mag is split.

This problem usually occurs when you install an OnTarget Trigger Shield because the mag rests on the shield and gets pushed up a tiny bit. I had that with mine and I filed down the mag a tiny bit. Works great now. Every once in a while there a MkII out of the factory with this problem.

It's easy to see if this is happening. Just load an empty case and slowly draw back the bolt. Carefully watch the case and you'll see if it touches the mag.

A Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor is a top quality replacement for the original. I have the Exact Edge extractor on my MkII and extraction has been extremely reliable and consistent. Each case is tossed with the same direction and velocity as the previous one. I recommend it.

For what it's worth, I've got this problem with my Mk II as well. I've filed the mags down and now it happens less, particularly with CCI Mini-Mags, its preferred feed. Probably if I hit the mags just a bit more it would disappear entirely.

It's rather annoying that Ruger doesn't adress this problem (or maybe they have/will, with the new Mk III), as it would be a simple fix, I think. It probably is simply too rare for them to bother with...

Mk IIs are a bit rough and tight when new. You need to break them in with a couple bricks of high velocity ammo before they start running like a fine watch.

Extractors on the guns are a known weak point, if the hook end isn't a sharp point, it needs to be replaced. On Target sells a nice extractor called the "Exact Edge: that, IMO, should be standard issue from Ruger. Or a call to Ruger will get you a new one N/C.

I had the same malfunctions, but with more frequency in both my MkIIs. I replaced the stock extractors with the Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. Both pistols also have the Ontarget trigger shield. Ammo used is Win Dynapoints. They have been reliable since the extractor change. I examined the stock extractors and noticed that instead of a sharp edge, they were dulled out, while the Exact edge was sharp. Larryw is right, the exact edge should be standard on all MKiIIs.

Hey, let me be the first to suggest the VQ extractor. Me and two of my buddies had extraction problems with our 22/45's, and they were all solved neatly with the VQ extractor. Cheap, easy fix.

The sear's a good buy, too.

I had identical issues with my MkII. The problems started at once every couple of mags, but over time turned into two and three times per mag. Like Bam-Bam, I put a Volquartsen extractor in mine and the problem was solved. No other issues.

Thanks for all the info. So where to I find a Volquartzen Extractor & some instructions on how to make the switch? Also would you change the extractor on account of 3 malfunctions in 700 rounds? Should I expect the issue to worsen with time?

Wow only $12, and easy to change. Thanks again everyone for the info.

$10.80, getting even better. I think I'll order one even though I may continue to test the Ruger a little more before installing.

Edit: I just checked out the link and the price is $10.80 with free shipping & handling. I couldn't pass it up, so I went ahead and ordered one. The other site total cost would have been $20 with S&H. Thanks again to everyone for all of the helpful info & links.
