On the Ruger website there is an offer to buy a new Mini-14 with a 20 round magazine included. You can also buy two additional magazines for $29.95 each.

This is not just the NRA special but includes all the 223 caliber rifles. There is no mention of the Mini 30s in this offer. Just thought you guys might like to know.

Well it does at least show that Ruger is moving away from ol' Bill's philosophy.
I'm not one of those people who gets too hung up on that - if a Ruger is what works best for me I'll buy it.

But I'd also call it too little. If you check their accessories, they are apparently not selling 20 rounders to just anyone who wants them. If they really want to correct their "collaborator" reputation, they should definitely look into correcting that.

Unfortunately, you have to buy a new rifle to "qualify" to buy two more 20 round magazines. Until they offer them to anyone, I'm going to have to hang my head in shame.

I like Mad Ogre (George Hill)'s take on this

8-11-08: Ruger needs to be c***-punched: Already on my short list of gun companies that piss me off, Ruger sends me an e-mail with this huge “RUGER MINI-14 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT” What this promotion is, is that you buy a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and you get a “GENUINE RUGER MANUFACTURED 20 Round Magazine FOR FREE!” WOW! And then Ruger will let you Purchase Up To Two More 20-round magazines for $29.99 each! WHOA! Hold me the f*** back! ***, Ruger? Do you really do expect your customers to be complete idiots? Some guys out there are probably really jazzed about this and think it's great. I don't buy it, and I don't buy Ruger's line. What happened to Ruger's old 30 round magazines? What happened to them just putting the big magazine in the gun box with the gun instead of making the customer send away for it? And who says you can only get a maximum of 3 magazines? Ruger does, evidently. And then they top it off with restrictions:

“Proof of purchase required for all redemptions, limit of a maximum of three (3) total magazines, free and purchased, per qualified .223 Rem. Ruger® Mini-14® purchase. A copy of the dated sales invoice showing model and serial numbers is required as proof of purchase.

* All requests for redemption must be postmarked no later than December 1, 2008 and received no later than December 15, 2008.”

Hey Ruger... I tell you what – you want to play that way? How about this: You buy an Armalite AR-15 rifle from me - what we have in stock – And I'll give you a 30 round magazine right then and there... and check this out... you can buy as many more as you d*** well feel like. How bout them apples, Ruger? Jackass.

Edited for some language.

Sums up my feelings. When Ruger starts shipping standard capacity mags with thier rifles, and selling them freely (as you can get them at any gunshop), I'll be much happier. Until then, there's a couple of other .223 rifles that use extremely common magazines that are very affordable.

I also think Magpul should make PMAGS for the Mini-14 and Mini-30s, just to piss Ruger off.

As we used to say: That's mighty white of them. 3 whole evil mags.

What will Ruger deign to offer us unwashed masses next? Perhaps even.... wait for it.... a folding stock? Bayonet lug?

I gave up on Ruger a long time ago. BSW

Hmm thats great or I could keep buying galil mags at $12 a pop for my saiga that shoots cirlces around the much more expensive ruger.

I dont know which makes me like the mini less it being such a poor preformer or rugers politics and support of anti gun legislation.

Well Geeze guys i didn't mean to set anyones hair on fire. I just thought it was a nice "heads up" and all.

Anyhow, "excuse the hell outta me" a Steve Martin used to say.

All seriousness aside i just thought it might be a good deal. I have my mini and several Pro-Mags so i'm good to go.

In the meantime remind me NOT to say anything about Jane Fonda.

Ratshooter, my (and I assume the other posters') intentions are NOT to flame you for posting this.

It is a decent deal for anyone who purchases a new Mini-14 during this "promotion", but many of us think that this is poor form on Ruger's part to limit the availability of the magazines.

Hey Avenger29 i know that no ones really after me. I just thought it was funny how everyone sorta went off at the mention of the Ruger offer.

I'm glad that Ruger seems to be moving in the right direction as far as selling us stuff they wouldn't have sold a short time ago. There is an article on the NRA Mini-14 in this months "GUNS" magazine and a Ruger rep said as soon as the NRA minis are gone the 20 round mags will be available to everyone. Thats a positive sign, right?

The reason i brought up Jane Fonda is because thats a person i can't forgive or forget. She is nothing but the idiot brat of a famous person and had no business opening her mouth about the war veterans from Vietnam. At least Bill Ruger was a man with a company to protect in a way he thought best even if shooters didn't agree with him.

Things are changing and it looks like its for the better.

Suggestion: Write or email Ruger, politely requesting that they supply the market with ten- and twenty-round magazines for the Mini-14 and the Mini-30.

That probably would do more good than harumphing on the Internet...

despite the inherent problems with the offer. This is definitely a step in the right direction!

ratshooter

Thanks for the heads up. Good price and I am always happy to add a 20 round mag to the stockpile at a reasonable price. I'm in.

Nope, I'm not in. I purchased my Mini in May. Mine came with two 20s anyway and I purchased two fives as spares. I wouldn't mind a couple more 20s and as time goes on it seems they may be available at a reasonable price. By reasonable I don't mean $40 to $50.

Art Eatman - I'd normally be inclined to agree but check out Ruger's contact information page.
They don't have a toll free number and they don't have an email address. They don't even provide an address where you could actually mail a letter because the addresses provided on their site only seem to be concerned with service.
Seems to me that they have it set up so you won't call/write them unless you absolutely have to.
I may be wrong, but it looks like they don't want to hear from us.

never bought a Ruger,

never plan on it....

O'l Billy boy wanted to jump in bed with the gungrabbers to protect his skin. He advised them how to take away your rights and get away with it.

I'm not one to send money to those who betrayed me.

SSN Vet,

Ol' Billy Boy is dead. There are other reasons to dislike Ruger at this point, but his politics died with him.

Thats because Bill (God rest his soul) is out of the picture now. He was a great designer of firearms, but his politics were always a little fishy. I still like my Ruger firearms though... they make a good gun for the money.

The Mini-14 reveiwed in Guns magazine this month shot a 1.5" group at 50 yards and a 2.75-3+" group at 100 yards.

This was with a scope and a bad rest for the 100 yard groups. There is no mention of how many rounds had been fired in that barrel. If it was brand new some shooting may tighten groups some once the "new" is off the sharp lands. Then again, maybe not.

For that type of rifle and its intended use a 3" group would suit me.

According to the Ruger website, all Mini-14's are available with 20 round factory mags shipped with them. They still have the Minis available with 5 rounders, presumably for sale in places with state-level "Assault Weapons" bans still in place.

Sure, but then you'd still be stuck with a Ruger Mini-14...

Fair point... I prefer AR's, but for some reason I like Minis too.

3MOA was the best a gun rag could wring out of a Mini-14?!? You know that was the best group they ever shot, hand picked ammo, from a bench, no wind, sacrificed a dove...

Hell, with careful selection of the groups I can get my AK down to 2MOA. BSW

Here's my 1.5MOA AK group, if you ignore the 'flyer'.

What about these other 'flyers'?

I guess it wasn't too good after all. Which is why I don't use the flash-hider on that AK anymore. BSW

Don't believe everything you see, or read.
