A wood stock may warp and affect the accuracy if exposed to extreme moisture. A synthetic stock is stable in all ways and not affected by moisture. If you are going to the jungles of Viet Nam, definitely get the synthetic!
I would say it may be more important on a highly accurate target rifle ~ not saying the Mini 14 is not accurate.
Whichever, keep what you get reasonably dry and don't worry about it. Go with what you like. Both will do you a good job. One is on my wish list!
They are stamped .223 , but strait from Rugers mouth and in the owners manual all but the target model will have no issues with 556 . Mine will eat whatever I feed it , never a hiccup .
Generally more accurate with the wood stock , a little bedding of the action , a no pressure bedding of the block , the 580 and up series taper barrels will go 1.5 regularity . I haven't had as good a luck with the Ruger Tach stock .
Spyder, regarding your original question, the K prefix on Rugers designates a stainless rifle. My experience shows the wood stock to be more accurate & much easier to bed if needed.
