Been looking into getting a accurate 22 pistol. Not exactly sure of what I should get though. Not wanting to spend huge amount on one because I'm no competition shooter, but I don't want junk neither. Just looking for something nice and accurate. Might try to pluck some squirrels off! Ruger mkiii looks nice. The old man saying high standards the way to go. What do you think?

Buy a MkII if getting a Ruger, it will be a much better pistol and for less money. MkIII's have too many problems due to all the additional "safeties".

I have a Ruger Mk III Hunter and it has been a flawless performer, with over 3000 rounds of CCI mini-mag through it with NOT ONE failure. The only thing I did was remove the loaded chamber indicator the day I brought it home. I also keep it clean and lubricated. It is a very accurate pistol, just like my Standard from 1952 and my Mk III 22/45.
You can't really go wrong with any Ruger .22

Like VerdeVolpe said; removed the loaded chamber indicator and mine has been flawless. I just went to the range today and it is my always take-along .22 pistol. Shooting it from a rest, using a 50 foot standard slow fire bullseye target and optical sight, I kept nearly all my 40 shots into the 10X ring. Basiclly removing the center out of the target, about the size of a quarter. LM

I bought a MKIII a couple months ago. Standard steel grip, blued, 5.5" bull barrell. I absolutely LOVE it. No problems.. so far.

I love both the Ruger Mk III and the Browning Buckmark.

I own the Ruger Mk III Hunter 6 7/8 barrel. I love it. I've got about 4,000 rounds through it. It has had maybe 10 hiccups. About half of those were entirely ammunition related. The other half were caused by the LCI being dirty. The Ruger and the Buckmark shoot pretty evenly, so just pick the one that feels best to you. One thing the Ruger does have going for it is a wealth of aftermarket parts to tinker with.

I'd probably go with the Ruger Mark II/III myself with the 5.5" bull barrel.

I asked myself that very same question 30 years ago and bought a High Standard Victor. Sounds like your Dad and I have similar tastes.

High standard target pistols are nice shooters, but I would stick with a Ruger Mk II or Buckmark also. They both have proven track records.

Removing the extra "features" is an easy fix---my MkIII has been fantastic since day one---and yes, the first thing I did was fix the extra features.

MKIII target. Fun, accurate, the grips work for me. But if you don't like cleaning your guns pass on this. It's just to complicated.

I've 2 MK IIs and you couldn't give me a MK III. too many complaints on assembly/disassembly. I'm not keen on the mag disconnect OR the loaded chamber indicator either.

They're great pistols and IMHO, the complaints are greatly exaggerated, particularly those about taking them apart. Which should be done only periodically anyway, not every time you shoot. Check out both the Browning Buckmarks and the various Ruger MK-series guns. Including the Ruger 22/45, particularly the new "RP" models with replaceable 1911 grip panels. There's now five or six variations of it and they're far more comfortable for me than the standard auto.

Mine has the Volquartsen trigger kit with a 2lb letoff, no magazine disconnect, the sling shot mod and ivory micarta by JP.

I just picked up a MKIII 22/45 RP 5.5" and I love it. It's the most fun I"ve had with a pistol in a while. I have 650 rounds through mine and not a single problem that wasn't due to cheap ammo. The 22/45 has a nice grip angle if you are accustomed to the 1911 angle or similar.

all of which can be removed or disabled in abot 5 minutes if they give you trouble.

This has been an informative thread.....After "not" listening to others advice and getting a Ruger Mk. I've been through many .22lr handguns none that have lasted or worked correctly.
For some reason I've never liked the look of Rugers Mk's, as good as they are reported to be I always ended up going for something "sexier" :uhoh: to my regret....(ain't that always the case..?)
This year I've discovered the MkIII 22/45-RP....The addition of the replaceable grip panels change the whole dynamic of the 22/45 in my eyes. I like it and I'm on the hunt for one...hopefully it'll be the .22 I hold on too forever.

I have a MkIII Target with bull barrel and a red dot scope and can flick gnats off at 20 yards unsupported. It's amazingly accurate and one of my favorite pistols period. I often use my MkIII with my new-shooter students because it builds confidence so quickly. I highly recommend this pistol! :)

Spend 10 minutes on this website and it will help you a lot with basic Ruger questions. Any of the MK's will will the bill. Low cost trigger modifications make them very, very nice shooters. All is do it yourself.

We love our MKIII 22/45. We just had to find the right bulk ammo for it, it can be a little picky, but I'm not complaining. Taking apart is only a little tough the 1st time, after that you learn the tricks and it is simple. My wife grew up with a MkII and she likes the MKIII we have just as much. Can't go wrong with a MK series.

I have had 2 Ruger Target MKIIs...both excellent, accurate and fun (inexpensive) to feed! You can find used target MKIIs for about $250 where I live. My 1993 5.5" MKII comes with me every trip to the handgun range, so it is my most often fired gun ... I must have like 3000 rds through it. I can shoot tight groups through iron sights at 25 yrds ... and I am the limiting factor; the gun is flawless.

I have also been toying with getting a browning buck mark too ... no particular reason, but just because it is also inexpensive & recommended by many too. Got to love the 22LRs!
