Ruger price jump

Besides, cursing a successful man for having an opinion different than your is probably un-American.

Hmmm. I thought expressing my opinion about his opinion is probably very American. And I don't buy Ruger. (Except for my 22/45 :) ) I also don't buy S&W anymore.

With the US $$ inflating as it has been and is...I would expect to see more and more jumping here shortly. Its a shame...

What is this inflation of which you speak? It's about as close to bupkis as you can reasonably expect of an economy with a floating currency valuation. See here for more. It would take a seriously cynical economist indeed to claim high rates of inflation.

That said, the rising cost of living pegged to energy costs can and probably will have a noticeable effect down the road, but that has yet to be reflected in prices to any meaningful degree.

... ahem. Pardon me for hijacking a perfectly good thread about guns with Econ101.

For the record, I have a Ruger SP101 2 1/4" stainless .357 Magnum revolver, and while it's my third-favorite gun (out of three) it doesn't lose much ground to my other ones. When I get some coin that I can burn frivolously I'd likely buy another Ruger, probably the GP100. I really dislike their autopistols, however. The factory grips suck, and I prefer stuff that doesn't require replacement parts right out of the box.

Prices

It's been no secret that the global metals market has inflated dramatically

Stainless steel in raw form has doubled in the last year.

Both Ruger and S&W stock are performing very nicely.

Smith and Wesson Holding (SWHC).

Analysts consider both stocks still a "strong buy".
With strong sales.

I have owned both stocks for over a year so buy a Ruger or a S&W. ;)
It's all the same to me.

I have purchased two S&W in the last six months, so it is like owning energy stocks/gasoline. Every S&W I purchase or gallon of gas, a little goes back in my pocket.

Wow, the way of thinking by some is just amazing. Besides steel prices continually rising the last two years, like evrything else, firearms and their accessories go up in price. There's not just raw materials in the equation but everything else involved. Labor rates, operating expences of the facility, fuel costs - it all adds up.

All of this is mildly interesting, BUT - why are you buying new guns? I own more double-action revolvers than I have time to shoot, and I didn't buy any of them new. New isn't necessarily better. S&W new is lawyer lock (that pimple on the frame above the cylinder release). Colt no longer makes DA revolvers. Ruger's best ever (arguably) were the Six series - Speed Six, Service Six and Security Six.

Before you buy new, check out some of the older DA revolvers - Colt Cobra, Diamondback and Python (and Detective Special); S&W K, L, & N frames; the Rugers noted above. You may be surprised at the workmanship and quality of the older revolvers. It's worth saying again - new isn't necessarily better.

well I dont like how the company operates but I love my old P85 & P89. They are tanks and reliable. As for a recent price increase.....I dont know if I would spend 8% more on any Ruger.

Others have done a pretty good job explaining markets to the economically miseducated, but it should be noted that $41 increase on the $389 original price is 10.5%, not 8%.

Jeez, I've never heard such a bunch of whining cheapskates! The price of materials for components, the fuel to cast those components, labor, health care for that labor, transportation, not to mention ever-more-expensive liability insurance and the expenses involved in complying with the ever-changing regulations our munificent government saddles the manufacturers with, and a lousy 8% has you screaming like 8-year old girls who found a spider in your panties. Prices could have stayed the same since 1967 and there are those who would not pass up the chance to complain. How much do you think a new Ruger costs in Japan? Maybe England?

No one's making you buy 'em...

I don't know but the prices for the SP101 on the Ruger site are the same tonight as they were several month ago. I would think if Ruger really raised their prices the Retail prices on the site would reflect that raise.

+1 on the 3 inch SP101. With a little trigger work and polishing, they are a J frame on steroids. I'm thinking about taking the next step up...getting the 3 inch GP100 and getting the ultimate fighting revovler.
