All,

The picture is below and excuse the lint on the revolver I had it in a pouch at the gun show today looking for grips.

I found a really nice pair of redhawk grips and they fit but my grip panel locater the little round black spindle in the grip handle was way to small. This is the new KRH44 4inch from ruger. I really like this weapon but hate the bantam grips, I have been looking for grips for over a year, now I have run into another hurdle and I am getting very frustrated. To the point I am seriously contemplating selling my first weapon in over 18 years of shooting. Even though I have very large hands Ruger really screwed up putting bantam grips on this thing they are just to fat. I thought it was something I could adjust to and can't.
These are the grips I found today at the show but the best thing of them all they were 49.99 brand new. I ended up not getting them in fear of not being able to use them.
Ruger Redhawk Grips

So the question, for those that have changed out their grips have you also had to replace the grip locator with one that has a larger button on it and if so where did you get it (please place and part number) along with the the grips you matched it up with.

The guy swore his grips were for the redhawk and I believe him as he took a used 5.5inch older redhawk he had for sale and took the original factory grips off and put these on. On that older Redhawk the button in the center of the grip locator was much larger.

I started to trade this 4 inch in on the 5.5inch he had, he would have done a straight up trade but it would have been a major lost for me even though the 5.5 was in great shape, that's how frustrated I am with this project. Something I feel should take maybe a day or two to find grips you like and that's it.

Guys&Gals please lend a helping hand to a frustrated fellow.

You need RedHawk Grips, NOT SUPER RedHawk grips. That is probably what has been giving you so much trouble. I have some Pachmayr Decelerator grips on mine whish are GREAT for large hands.

I am not sure how you got the idea that I was looking at super redhawk grips. But these are redhawk grips that I am looking at.

I understand what you are looking for. You also stated that you were having problem getting grips that fit. I had to assume that grips you tried in the past were Super grips and not standard BlackHawk grips. If you were unsure that standard BlackHawk grips would fit, getting someone with another Standard BlackHawk let you try their grips on your gun would clear up what grips actually fit your gun. Sorry you misunderstood. I am just trying to help you find the proper grips for your gun.

No I understand Herohog you are saying blackhawk that is a ruger single action totally different frame. My gun is a Ruger Redhawk, I have been trying the right grips. It's that on the new redhawk frame the grip locator is different and you need a new one which is a 4 dollar part to swap out the grips. I am on the right path now.

CRUD! My bad, I meant RED Hawk. So sorry man. My Bad. Substitute RED everywhere I used BLACK and it will make sense.

I am quite interested in if the new Redhawks with those butt ugly uncomfortable grips will accept the old style wood Redhawk grips. I wish I knew someone with one to try.

I have sen many post with them on one. This is what I am going through walkalong looks like you just have to change out the grip locator. We will find out as I just ordered mine from numrich.

The new Redhawks use a plastic locator that is made for the rubber grips, to get the old style wood grips to fit you need the old style black plastic locator. Ruger parts department at about three bucks.

Mine had the factory wood grips and I ordered the Pachmayr Decelerator grips for the Red Hawk. They didn't list a different grip for the Red Hawk series, just the Super Red Hawk. Now I am confused as all the aftermarket grips I looked at only listed Red Hawk and Super Red Hawk so why do they universally fit without regard to the grip locater? My locater was black rubber.

So. Is the difference in the plastic locators the diameter of the "studs" that stick out in the middle?

If they would make a 4" .357 Redhawk, I would buy the first one I saw. Hint, hint Ruger. ;)

I should never have sold my Ruger Redhawk 5.5-incher. They're nice and very well balanced, but not much fun to shoot with full loads. Wood grips also are out on full throttle rounds as well, though they look nice. Neoprene is my first choice. With a barrel that short, my group size turns to mush, anyway. Truth to tell, I think the main reason I like them so much is because they look so much like the Security-Six. (Of course I bought the new STAR TREK movie because it looked so much like the old, and boy, I was sure wrong about that!)

Mine is the long barrel version. Not sure of the year. I will have to check the Serial number or, if it uses one, the dash code. It is polished SS. Here it is:

the plastic locator (black piece at the bottom of the grip frame) in the OP's pic is indeed a smaller diameter grip locator protrusion than what I have seen or experienced on Ruger DA revolvers.

Just call Ruger and order that part.

Yes that is the difference walkalong.

I just think the grips are to fat it just does not feel right to me. I was going to get these grips http://www.grips4guns.com/revolver/ruger/item_1616002.html

They cover the back strap, yest I know they are wood. Here is the difference for me. The rubber ones are hard anyway and do not cover the backstrap, the wood ones of course are hard but cover the backstrap which means more of that energy will be spread out over more area and not all back into the palm of your hand. Most of all for me it is not about recoil because 10grains of hs-6 is an awesome light 44mag load for this weapon, I just really hate the thick feel of the rubber grips. If they were thinner this would not be an issue.

It would be nice if Ruger gave a voucher with the Super Redhawk, Redhawk and the GP100 for a set of grips that fit people with Extra Large or Small hands.

the grips they offer I would consider useless too wood, and they have those stupid finger grooves that don't match my hand and probably may others.

I tried some of the Badger grips for a different gun, but the finger grooves did not fit my hands. Beautiful grips, but I sold them. I also don't like really thin grips. I may be in the minority here, but I really like the wood grips on the Redhawks, even shooting full loads. I will admit that one can shoot more with the rubber grips before tiring.

I miss my Redhawk...it was the first revolver I ever owned.......sold it when I finished college to buy a class ring. SS, 7.5", Pachmayr grips.....It was beautiful. Ready for this....lost the ring....heartbreak.

Re: Badger Grips

Over at the Colt Forum someone mentioned the Badgers can be ordered WITHOUT the grooves if ordering from Jim Badger direct. I have seen pictures of a couple of guns with Badgers minus the finger grooves.

The Decelerator grips are a softer compound and DO cover the back-strap. The rubber on the back-strap IS thin but is better than nothing. I will take some pics of mine tonight to show their design as there some aspects of the grips I would change if I could...

I absolutely hated the Hogue grips that came on my brand new 4" Redhawk. They didn't fit me at all, and were so wide (from front to back) that they put the exposed metal backstrap right into my thumb joint. Not to mention I thought they were ugly as sin. So I ordered a pair of standard rosewood Redhawk grips from Ruger and had no problems installing them. Now, even though the recoil is a little sharper, it is spread out into the meaty part between my thumb joint and first finger joint. Plus, I think it looks MUCH better. Take a hint, Ruger, and source out this 4" Redhawk grip dilemma to someone who will make an attractive rubber grip with covered backstrap. You can see a picture at this thread I started:
