Ruger "SIX" (security, speed, service)

I bought my 4" Security Six 30 years ago and have no intentions of parting with it.

The Security Six provides a solid platform for a late night meet and greet. Add to it an extra helping of Hornady HP/XTP and a 90 lumen tactical light and you have all the makings for a surprise party. RSVP is preferred.

I have my grandad's Security Six that he carried every day as a cop . even have the holster he used, I dont shoot that one too often and you can tell it was his daily carry gun from all the wear. i've got a Speed Six that i shoot occasionally, good gun, seems to get a little stiff after a few 357 loads.

People keep talking about how great the new triple-lock Rugers are, and so they very well may be; however, I've seen no deficiency in the non-triple lock Security-Six line at all. Skeeter Skelton said he knew of three of them that had EACH digested more than 30,000 hot magnum rounds. One was a tiny bit out of time, but the other two were fine. Smith & Wesson K-frames won't touch that.

The gun's strength is in its massive frame and modular design. Everything
is oversize, just to make it stronger.

Can't decide which one to get? Get all three!

If you prefer round-butts, make them round butts!

A Speed-Six is beautiful and strong.

The solid frame means no weakening side plate.

I LOVE my Rugers! I have a 4" stainless Security-Six with the square butt Pachmayr presentation grips. Actually it's my wifes, she used it as a service piece when she worked for Loomis Fargo Armored. I only have a 6 1/2" .357 Blackhawk.

That one looks a little purple, too.

I later got a blued Security-Six and wished I'd kept it just to break the monotony.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the short barreled (2.75-inch) guns came in a variety of sizes? Not length, but some came skinny barreled, some came heavy, and still others came with super-heavy?

RugerSS_1.jpg

This is the heaviest barrel I've ever seen on a SS.

This is one of my favorites, a skinny.

And this a regular size. Notice how the underlug rises to
meet the end of the barrel.

I love this thread !!! I don't have a "SIX" ---- at least not now. I had 4 inch Service Six many years ago.

I've been looking for a good 2&3/4 inch Speed Six for some time now. I'm mostly a S&W accumulator, but I really like the short barreled Speed Six.

I have a couple of 3 inch S&W M-13's and would like to complement them with the Ruger Speed Six. Seems like they would be comparable.

Hope you guys keep this thread going and add more pics. :)

Great time for this thread to surface. I just picked this SS up this weekend. I've always been a Smith revolver guy, but this 2 3/4 barrel looked interesting. It shoots great and is way over built.

I Joined today!

I traded for a stainless Security Six today... swapped a model 4006 Smith for it, since I had two of them and had an opportunity to get something to match up with my model 19 Smith. I really got it so I wouldn't have to pump rounds through my Smith which is absolutely like new... I bought that one in 1969 (if I remember correctly) and it looks pristine even today.

The new Six is also beautiful... a few minor scratches on it, but for the most part 98% clean and ready to go. It has a 4" barrel and adjustable sights, and feels like it belongs in my hand... taking it to the range tomorrow.

I like shooting my high capacity autoloaders, but there's just something special about shooting a good old "six shooter" that really performs... and the Ruger Security Six gives me the impression that I've got the best of this deal, even if the money isn't exactly right on the value of the swap.

Anyway, I'm in the club... and just proud as punch to be here! I love shooting the .357 rounds, and if you ever need to stop a car, there's nothing better than a .357 through the engine block to make the mechanics tinker around for days... I've got bigger guns, but the .357 is just "comfortably too big" for most people, and an awsome round for self defense... if you're ever attacked by a cape buffalo or mountain lion on your way to work...;)

Police Service Six

I haven't been back to THR in some time...I hope to change that! Lately I have been playing with my SS 4" Police Service Six with Tyler-t grips and am falling in love with it all over again. What a great gun and a great value! It serves bedside duty and occasional carry when off duty. With my bianchi holster it rides GREAT all day long (something I don't like to do with my 4" 686). It loves NYCLAD .38spl +P.
It's the perfect camping gun and would be on my short-list for a survival gun. All in all, a great fighting/utility piece!

I don't have a lot of experience fitting grips, but the Hogue Rubbers just don't seem to sit flush with the backstrap of the handle on my 4" service six, no matter what I try. Any tips? (Or suggestions for a superior rubber grip?)

i REALLY like my Pachmayr Compac grips on my Speed Six 2.75"... They're WAY different than the stock grips and they dont "grab" like soft rubber grips do.

DSdanger mine were the same way...I still have them...but just not on Six;) I LOVE the cheap ($8.99!!!) Sile rubber grips at cdnn!!! I have put DT 125gr full bore .357's through it with NO PAIN!!! They are great for ccw, they dont "grab" your clothing like the hogues!

Just finished reworking a set of factory target grips to fit my hand, but don't have them on the gun yet. But here it is with the original grips.

I have a Stainless 4" Security-Six with the Square butt Pachmayer Presentation grips. Wonderful shooter! Almost as accurate as my 6 1/2" .357 Blackhawk.

My Ruger "Six" is a 50th Year Single-Six...no DA Ruger revolver in 'Foggy's Artillery Locker', but I'm gonna fix that REAL SOON.

i have a liberty service six

and its a lovely shade of purple. it has the old grip frame. but sometimes the cylinder when at rest not cocked..the cylinder will turn two or three revolutions before it locks. problem or no? when the hammer is cocked and trigger pulled the cylinder is bank vault tight. shoots fine just has a quirk.

yep thats them! Also if you bundle some high cap mags with your grip order...cdnn will drop the shipping to $7.99!

As for differences in the Sixes, IIRC they are:

Security square butt and adjustable sights
Police/Service square and fixed
Speed RB and fixed

Here is my recent buy. 2-3/4" Speed six with Tyler T adapter from T-grips.com and FIST #9 holster. Very nice carry gun.
