Well my family really blew me away this morning. I was told by my son to go by my favorite gunstore and pick up some ammunition, which I thought was silly, especially since I re-load this caliber. I did as told and as soon as I walked in the clerk handed me the paperwork for a new gun. He just told me to fill it out and not question why. I was a little suspicious but did as told. When finished he handed me my present all nicely wrapped. They all waited while I opened it and then my wife and sons came from the back to see the expression on my face when I saw the Super Redhawk Alaskan in .44mag.

I had been toying with having one of my .41mag Redhawks cut down for better carry and my sons were adamately against it. I think they want them when I have gone to that great gunrange in the sky. I had even thought of buying another Redhawk in .44mag to have modified since I really didnt like the Super Redhawk with that broomhandle barrel sticking out from the frame. I had, however looked at the Super Redhawk Alaskan, that to me, looks like a 2" SP-101 on steroid's. I liked the way it looked, much better than the regular Super Redhawk. Obviously my sons heard me.

It is a handfull of heavy stainless steel, but I am used to carrying big guns. I am really looking forward to getting it to the range for a tryout with both 44 specials and 44 magnums.

I'll get some pictures to post this weekend.

Bless your heart. Bless their hearts. That's sweet.

And best of all, I've heard there's absolutely no muzzle blast from the new Alaskans. No recoil, either.

Well, maybe just a little.

:D :D

Anyway, congrats. Sounds like you've got a super family.

I got one of the Super Redhawk Alaskans in 44 magnum last week. It looks like an awesome gun and I can't wait to shoot mine. And I do plan on carrying mine as I am used to big guns. I just need to decide on a holster.

Please post your range report

Congrats on a wonderful gift from your family!!

I was thinking of getting an Alaskan, mainly because I love .44 and lots of oomph coming out the barrel. It would also be nice to have when backpacking or camping in some of the places where I have come acros some very large black bears. I normally take my compact .45 or .40 auto, but sometimes a .44 would be better.

I would enjoy hearing what you think of it in the holster for a period of time and the range report. I am waffling between a few alternatives:

* SRH Alaskan 2 1/2" (41 oz but built like a vault)
* SW 329PD 4" (27 oz!!)
* 629 4" Mountain Gun or regular (about 40 - 45 oz)

The 629 would be a classic, but having owned a Redhawk, I know the Alskan would be able to handle a steady diet of Buffalo Bore. The 329 would be a joy to carry, but is pricey and will the Sc/Ti hold up over time as well as RUGER STEEL?

Tell if you find any reason NOT to buy the Alaskan given these alternatives (try really, really hard!).

My wife shocked me over the years with nice firearms as gifts. Sadly, I started selling or trading them. Now, she buys me other things. Additionally, I really miss most of those firearms! The message here is simple, if you want more such goodies, keep and enjoy the Alaskan! I wonder if I can trade away some DVD's... and BVD's...

To Run & Shoot: Such a quandry! First, if you want to shoot the 4" .44M, forget the 329PD. If you really want a 4"-er, forget the Redhawk, as it's minimum length is 5.5". Now your choice is the 4" 629 or 629MG. I had the MG variant for years - and loved it. I recently replaced it with a new 4" 629 (SKU 163603), which, at 41.5 oz, is a whole two ounces more! It also has a standard, ie, non-tapered, barrel, both a wider trigger and hammer spur, orange insert front sight, and white outline rear sight. It is also in production, which the 629MG isn't, although some dealers may still have one from the last run. Word is that the next MG run will be the blued version - the 29MG - if you wait a bit.

My vote, back in April, was to replace my MG with a standard 4"-er. I couldn't be happier. Like it's predecessor, the 629MG, it can 'dress-up' with some Ahrends wood stocks - and even be fun to shoot with my wimpy .44M's, which Elmer keith wouldn't have probably called Specials. For more oomph, I sub a Hogue .500 Magnum backstrap-enclosing rubber grip, like it sports now. It's year older sibling, a 6" half lug 629, also sports that grip. Great recoil tamer - very near the same, except for the internal fit, as the Ruger Alaskan's grip, which is also a new Hogue.

I really like the Alaskan series - you got a winner, Bigmike45, both in your family - and their gift. Congratulations!

As promised here are some pics:

I found the holster in a used holster box there and paid a whopping $5 for it. Fits just fine for field carry.

I've been thinking about that same gun. I wonder how fast it could launch a 300 grn. bullet ? Congrats :D

Hi all, I'm new here. Just came a cross this post for the Alaskan in 44 and wanted to chime in. I got one a few weeks back, and have put about 100 rounds through it already. I was very impressed with the little recoil it has. Not to say it doesn't recoil, I just expected more. Because of that, I decided to pick up a Super redhawk factory grip insted of the hogue the come with because it's easier to conseal with the smaller grip. I don't think I would try that with the 454 modle, but I like it on this gun, and I think it looks nicer. Now the issue is finding a holster. Can anyone recomend a good paddle, or pancake holster for it? I have read about a few that were recomended, and I'm sure they are great, but I don't want to drop $100+ on a holster. I was hoping to go around $50 at most.

Guys,
If anyone is till looking for a good holster for this beast (regardless of caliber), I would really suggest the Simply Rugged brand. I got mine for $60 - great leather, outstanding craftsmanship, and as respectively good/solid as the pistol. I know that we all get tired of reading reviews, but this holster was discussed at: http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-SRHAlaskan454.htm

different grip for Alaskan

afternoon all. I purchased an Alaskan 44 a while ago. Great gun. I was wondering if it were possible to put the sp101 laser grip on it. The guns a bit hard to conceal with current grip and I really like the laser grip.
Thanks in advance

I love mine and have posted pictures in several threads. If you want to plink with it, try out some Blazer aluminum. They shoot soft and are cheap.

I switched to the standard SRH grips on my Alaskan, and they work great. any GP100 grip should work fine on it also. SP100 grips won't work.
