Anybody have any first hand knowledge of the Ruger M77 Mark II compact?? I'm looking at getting one in .260 rem and would like to get some user opinions first. I'd like to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let er rip!!!

Really, No one has handled one of these. Aside from the velocity loss, they look like a great little gun.

I had a thread going on a similar topic here and on another board. Consensus was that the Ruger felt nice and those who had them liked them. The most common criticism was lack of iron sights and too short a barrel.

I found a dealer who has the blued (now discontinued) version on clearance for $449. Needless to say I am picking one up this weekend.

Was more less wandering how well the gun fit an adult shooter, acuracy, and recoil. Kinda looking at it for my wife to shoot as well. Heard a few comments about the action being rough but mostly from people who weren't used to bolt actions. Has anyone chronographed any rounds to give an example of velocity loss? I was figuring between 200 and 300 fps.

As a point of reference, I'm 6', 200 lbs, and wearing a normal winter hunting coat, it fits me just fine. Might be a little short w/o a coat, but it's nothing most people can't adapt to.

No idea about velocity loss, and really don't care. I handload most of my ammo, and a slightly faster burning powder would compensate anyhow.

None of our whitetail deer have complained about a few FPS loss.

I reviewed the same rifle in .308 just a few days ago here. Search and it should show up. In short, I like it a lot.

I had one in .243 Win. until my brother shot it. He took it home for his wife. (So he said.) :scrutiny:
It was fairly accurate. About what you expect for a Ruger. (1.5"-2.5" @100 yds.) It handled very well and was easy to carry.

Thanks for the input. Now if I can just find one around here somewhere.

I have the Ruger 77MkII Frontier in 308 and 7mm08. It's the same gun as the Compact with a scout scope rib. I got the Frontier since it gave me the option of a conventional scope mount as well as the forward mount. No harm in having options... :)

I love them beyond reason. They are a bit chunky in weight but they carry well, are huntin' accurate, and have (what passes these days for) above-average fit-n-finish. I might part with my 7mm08 someday, but they'll bury me with my 308.

I've gotta 7mm-08 in the blued/walnut version. Haven't tested its accuracy yet (will do shortly). It fits me just fine and is really light.
