Run what you brung.

<ZZ Top “La Grange†cranked>

I was challenged, the Gauntlet thrown down. With one Final out of the way, more exams to follow, well I just had to do this.

I had walked away, ignored, suggested reading, training, anything; Then a personal nerve was hit. Matter of principle with me, the line in the sand was crossed.

A disrespectful comment about Vietnam and Vietnam Vets was made. My eyes went green.

“I have ammo to donate Steve, I can’t handle a shotgun right now, Shoulder gets out of whack, gift from Charlie from back in ‘Nam.†. Yeah well every so often a minor surgery is expected…

< “Dark Side of the Moonâ€- Pink Floyd, cranked >

I said I would handle it. All he and his daughter needed to do was set it up.

Daughter- “I know if you can see it you can fell it- about your eyes though…â€

“You run what you brung – I’ll manage†I replied.

My ’74 Super X Model 1 – 28†bbl with Nu-Line external knurled chokes was brought of retirement. I also grabbed my bone stock 2004 Express 870, well the J hook safety has been replaced with an original like we used for 50 years, 28†barrel and Rem-Chokes. [“ they suck you knowâ€] My shooting glasses- Aviator Bushnell’s in Clear and my Aviator style in Vermillion.

<â€Can’t you See†– Marshall Tucker Band-cranked>

I was going to borrow his 1955 870 Wingmaster as well with a 26†bbl fixed choked IC, and use the 20†short tube fixed choke in IC.

I was born in ’55, someday I will have a 870 made in my birth year. Again principle as to why I had to use that year of gun.

Ammo was the Western 00 buck and Slugs. 500 rounds each. “Use what you need to make them bleed†he said – that was my plan.

Now am a bit rusty, don’t get to shoot like I want to, for sure not like I once did. My opponents – well one born in 1987, the other in 1985. The make of their guns not important, only to say they had newer guns, with more goodies. They had me on more video game experience as well. I only played video games a few times with sick kids when I volunteered at a Childrens hospital. I’ve probably dropped more shells than they have ever shot.

< “Star Spangled Banner†Hendrix>

Smooth is good, then comes accuracy and speed. Mindset is good to have, good form, muscle memory and stamina comes in handy.

SuperX Model 1 never missed a beat, neither did I 200 slugs later we were still running.
My opponents- breakages occurred with guns and shooters. I was not hearing any negative remarks about Vietnam Vets, Old farts, Old guns and such.

They said I was not playing fair. I dunno they were using newer guns with gas systems…I grabbed the 2004 870 Express , yeah- “that pc of crap†.

They were allowed to grab new toys…err guns. I let them shoot Bird loads, I stayed with slugs, I was able to shoot faster, and keep the gun running despite not having extended magazine tubes on anything.

< “Desperado†Eagles>

For my personal reasons – I had to shoot that ’55 model. Who says you cannot make head shots out to 25 yards with first the stock 26†barrel with a fixed IC choke and then the short tube.

The eyes; well they ain’t what they used to be, especially with no ‘scripted shooting glasses. Then I knew that going in. My old 10X shooting pouch still works, just for situations like this it goes on the weak side – about 11 o’clock.

" That ain't fair, you never let your shooting hand leave the gun...you fed the gun with weak hand...hey, you shot them two without shouldering on the run..." .

Sorry man - all's fair in the game of seriousiness, had to explain what the 3 "F's" meant.

Rain…yeah I got drenched, still it kept the pollen away. I still get focused and forget about not being as young as I am supposed to be, been awhile since I tore a pair of jeans, never knew I did it. Rain - I learned before they were born to shoot thru the raindrops on glasses...Focus on the target...

< "Like a Rock"- Seger>

Guns ran without a hitch. The SX1 – taken down and cleaned with Ox-Yoke seemed fitting to use “Best Dam Solvent†and “Best Dam Oilâ€, all cleaned and ready for retirement – maybe. The 870’s will be re-assembled tomorrow.

Now the apology probably hurt more than the two C notes – I didn’t know about the C notes being part of the deal. “ Figured you get pissed†– nah, Principle is what had my eyes turn green. That will help him and daughter, re-coup the ammo I shot. I showed up to win, matter of principle for me. Him making - well actually the daughter making the side bets - so what?

Daughter suggested the young men make out a gratitude list, and make damn sure her daddy’s name and other’s like his be on that list. Suggested they visit and read that Memorial we have here.

Never go up against a “old man†and “old gunsâ€. He may know how to use them, and that “old man†might just not give a damn, they tend to play for keeps – especially when Principles are at stakeâ€. - Daughter got a bit riled...or just chose to verbalize what bottled up inside. Not that my mind was not thinking along along the same lines...

< "Turn the Page" - Seger, cranked>

Damn I had fun in the mud, the blood and rain. I fired all the slugd half the 00…from 2 “old guns†and 1 “piece of crapâ€. Shoulder and face don’t hurt. Bruises- Not me- can’t say that about the challengers though.

<â€Pissing in Wind†-Jerry Jeff Walker>

I shot trap since I was very young. I was always worried most about the quiet old guy without all the fancy equipment. Its the guys doing all the talking that are easiest to beat.

:)

I thought I'd cracked a rib, not from scooting and shooting, from Laughing so hard listening to Richard Pryor afterwards. "Mudbone", driving that tractor after cutting the seat out of the outhouse. Us old farts will remember Pryor's "Mudbone". :p

Allman Bros cranked up, "Whipping Post"...So I, well attempted to put the SX1 back in its gun case. Well that 2nd handle come off...as I was attempting to tie the boot lace...see the zipper played out a l-o-n-g time ago, another chunk of fabric...one with the biggest patch, just fell off...the dog gives me a quizzical look...dog escorted me to the trash can. Darn, I liked that 1975 model case too...had character, memories too...

So I took my knife and cut that Sack-Up [tm] I've darned a few times in half. Tied ends shut with a piece of rawhide, barrel went in one, the stock and fore-end in the other. These went into a generic baseball bat bag. That is how I carry my Express as well...

So the 870's got a good cleaning with good tunes from the Philips turntable, Marantz amp, Klisph speakers...daughter found the dealie and started playing old 45's...we had a pile of 33's we had perused and played...

Fired up a cigar, sipped my Jamacian Blue mountain coffee...Me and you and dog named blue - Lobo

Now we gotta figure out where to find some Western ammo...*grin*

As with most lessons, there are several ways to learn humility.

Some folks seem to always want to do it the hard way...

Good story, Steve. Thanks-

Thanks Lee-

Oh I recall being young (I think) and making a comment to a elder or mentor about some fella with a gun case falling apart, bluing worn off a gun. I never disrespected a person's service to his country tho' - not raised that way.

I always found me a new mentor, someone to saddle up to , watch and learn from. Had one fella 83 yrs old whip my butt when I was a pup...he shot until he passed at 87, and I had the honor of shooting pards with him, hunting with him...and when he was out shooting and I on the porch...I was taking side bets on the old fella - collecting too. :p

Come to think of it - he drove a blue truck...I gotta blue truck. :uhoh:

Appreciate the story, Steve, as always.

<Digging through my cd's, I haven't heard Hendrix's Star-Spangled Banner for quite some time>

(Oh, that barrel I asked you about last night, it's as good as mine. ;) )

kudu my friend,

I know it has been a hard week. I made others aware as well. We are here for you - you know that.

There is more to responsible firearm ownership - than firearms.

You are in the midst of such repsonsiblilties.

I was told back when, my repsonsibility was to keep the home fires burning, continue living the Freedom. That is what kept many of the Folks in the 'Nam mess going...Hurts like hell when some that said that didn't make it back, or those that did left a pc of themselves back in that hell-hole.

Me, I ain't that big of a deal. I better understand these Dimensions my mentors and eldsers spoke of going through. There are folks -be they older , younger , women , - whatever- with more experience and skill than I will ever have.

See I know that I will never know or be able to do everything. When one announces they have arrived they actually have just confirmed how immature they are.

I have experienced what I have. I have read SWAT and the various contributors and such. There is one common denominator. Nothing , not equipment, not ammo, no add-ons can buy experience, skill , targets, or keep you alive and safe.

You gotta learn correctly the basics, keep practicing the basics, and put in your time putting rounds downrange. Oh you may learn new skills, learn new equipment which makes a task better completed. Then again when all hell breaks loose, the optics , the batteries, the sidesaddle , extended mags ...etc., goes on the blitz...whatcha gonna do?

Basics. Keep the gun running and survive.

Nope this dealie was personal. I call it Respect. There was serious lack of it on behalf of my challengers...

Nope, going through a Dimension myself one might say...and you could not pay me enough to not be going through it.

...there I go up on the stage again...
..every ounce of energy I try to give away...
..you smoke the day's last cigarette, remembering what you said...Turn the Page...

Steve

A disrespectful comment about Vietnam and Vietnam Vets was made. My eyes went green.
I was born in 1949. The Tet Offensive started when I was 19 years old. I didn't have to go. I was in college and, well, think about it, most of us didn't have to go.

Several friends did though. I remember two kids a year younger than me playing basketball. They were a team, they played like brothers, both were short, but had great hands and moves, they were tough to beat. I loved watching them.

They went to Vietnam. Only one came back.

Kid Sandy grew up with went. He was a hero over there. But he came back with one leg gone and the other useless.

Steve, I'm glad you had the fortitude and the tools (personal tools, not physical) to stand up for my friends.

Great thread, and purpose. It took 20 years for someone outside the family to thank me for going to SEA. Hope others didn't have to wait so long.

Great sound track on this thread also.....

"Mind if we dance with your women"

Well only the daughter and her daddy caught the humor in that line. :p

So I gained permission to shoot the challenger's guns. I didn't shoot 3 of the six they had brought...dem were broke.

<Enter Carlin's seven words you cannot say on TV>

Well as the Gunny's and other mentors and elders have proven and said : " It ain't the gun...". The other two guns I "managed" to shoot, when they did in fact shoot -the same could be said. Amazing - without the side-saddle on one...it ran...

Now the daughter wanted a piece of ...err...the action. She brought out her old Beretta 303 in 20 ga and 1100 20 ga. We did a little demonstration of shooting cans off a fence, flurry style...7-15 yds using slugs mostly.

Girls can't shoot, and everyone knows a 20 ga gas gun is worthless - right? :D

For snickers and grins, the single shot H&R Topper in .410 and the 311 in 20 her daddy brought out " need to blow out the nelphs...".

Hey - I can do a Redneck Express Rifle just fine...I was in fear of them mutant ninja coffee cans - had 4 of them suckers to take care of..." hey ain't that something some guy in a old movie did once - reload like that? Sigh...

I mentioned folks been doing this since before Germany invaded Pearl Harbor....

...<whiz over their heads> they did not catch it . My Vet buddy I thought was gonna bust a gut. He Suggested they do an internet search - "Belushi + German Invasions" . :)

Took two with the Topper...them mutant ninja coffee cans allergic to 1/5 oz slugs btw. Seems fitting to play golf with a soda can...just had to lob a few out yonder...that rock begs to be busted...getting there...

$25 Pawn Shop single shot .410 ain't good for nothing ya know? Dang - I gotta find me another old one...

Okay, now where is a fella supposed to find cassette tapes of Jethro Tull ...older trucks ain't got a CD player ya know ? :)
