Run what you brung.
<ZZ Top “La Grange†cranked>
I was challenged, the Gauntlet thrown down. With one Final out of the way, more exams to follow, well I just had to do this.
I had walked away, ignored, suggested reading, training, anything; Then a personal nerve was hit. Matter of principle with me, the line in the sand was crossed.
A disrespectful comment about Vietnam and Vietnam Vets was made. My eyes went green.
“I have ammo to donate Steve, I can’t handle a shotgun right now, Shoulder gets out of whack, gift from Charlie from back in ‘Nam.†. Yeah well every so often a minor surgery is expected…

I said I would handle it. All he and his daughter needed to do was set it up.
Daughter- “I know if you can see it you can fell it- about your eyes though…â€
“You run what you brung – I’ll manage†I replied.
My ’74 Super X Model 1 – 28†bbl with Nu-Line external knurled chokes was brought of retirement. I also grabbed my bone stock 2004 Express 870, well the J hook safety has been replaced with an original like we used for 50 years, 28†barrel and Rem-Chokes. [“ they suck you knowâ€] My shooting glasses- Aviator Bushnell’s in Clear and my Aviator style in Vermillion.

I was going to borrow his 1955 870 Wingmaster as well with a 26†bbl fixed choked IC, and use the 20†short tube fixed choke in IC.
I was born in ’55, someday I will have a 870 made in my birth year. Again principle as to why I had to use that year of gun.
Ammo was the Western 00 buck and Slugs. 500 rounds each. “Use what you need to make them bleed†he said – that was my plan.
Now am a bit rusty, don’t get to shoot like I want to, for sure not like I once did. My opponents – well one born in 1987, the other in 1985. The make of their guns not important, only to say they had newer guns, with more goodies. They had me on more video game experience as well. I only played video games a few times with sick kids when I volunteered at a Childrens hospital. I’ve probably dropped more shells than they have ever shot.

Smooth is good, then comes accuracy and speed. Mindset is good to have, good form, muscle memory and stamina comes in handy.
SuperX Model 1 never missed a beat, neither did I 200 slugs later we were still running.
My opponents- breakages occurred with guns and shooters. I was not hearing any negative remarks about Vietnam Vets, Old farts, Old guns and such.
They said I was not playing fair. I dunno they were using newer guns with gas systems…I grabbed the 2004 870 Express , yeah- “that pc of crap†.
They were allowed to grab new toys…err guns. I let them shoot Bird loads, I stayed with slugs, I was able to shoot faster, and keep the gun running despite not having extended magazine tubes on anything.
< “Desperado†Eagles>
For my personal reasons – I had to shoot that ’55 model. Who says you cannot make head shots out to 25 yards with first the stock 26†barrel with a fixed IC choke and then the short tube.
The eyes; well they ain’t what they used to be, especially with no ‘scripted shooting glasses. Then I knew that going in. My old 10X shooting pouch still works, just for situations like this it goes on the weak side – about 11 o’clock.
" That ain't fair, you never let your shooting hand leave the gun...you fed the gun with weak hand...hey, you shot them two without shouldering on the run..." .
Sorry man - all's fair in the game of seriousiness, had to explain what the 3 "F's" meant.
Rain…yeah I got drenched, still it kept the pollen away. I still get focused and forget about not being as young as I am supposed to be, been awhile since I tore a pair of jeans, never knew I did it. Rain - I learned before they were born to shoot thru the raindrops on glasses...Focus on the target...

Guns ran without a hitch. The SX1 – taken down and cleaned with Ox-Yoke seemed fitting to use “Best Dam Solvent†and “Best Dam Oilâ€, all cleaned and ready for retirement – maybe. The 870’s will be re-assembled tomorrow.
Now the apology probably hurt more than the two C notes – I didn’t know about the C notes being part of the deal. “ Figured you get pissed†– nah, Principle is what had my eyes turn green. That will help him and daughter, re-coup the ammo I shot. I showed up to win, matter of principle for me. Him making - well actually the daughter making the side bets - so what?
Daughter suggested the young men make out a gratitude list, and make damn sure her daddy’s name and other’s like his be on that list. Suggested they visit and read that Memorial we have here.
Never go up against a “old man†and “old gunsâ€. He may know how to use them, and that “old man†might just not give a damn, they tend to play for keeps – especially when Principles are at stakeâ€. - Daughter got a bit riled...or just chose to verbalize what bottled up inside. Not that my mind was not thinking along along the same lines...

Damn I had fun in the mud, the blood and rain. I fired all the slugd half the 00…from 2 “old guns†and 1 “piece of crapâ€. Shoulder and face don’t hurt. Bruises- Not me- can’t say that about the challengers though.
