Has anyone shot +p ammo in their S&W 1911? Just wondering if this is safe. I am new to 1911's and I think it is plenty of gun to handle it, but would rather be on the safe side with my new pistol. I have a box of 200gr XTP Hornady and 230gr XTP Hornady that are both +p and I'd like to carry some of it in my 1911. What are your thoughts?

Here are some pics, by the way. I removed the stock rubber Hogue grips and installed Hogue smooth cocobolo grips, and bought a DeSantis rig to carry it in. I think I did well for my first 1911...just need the extended slide release now!

I have shot +P in my SW1911s with no ill effects. S&W advises you to avoid +P+.

i would also avoid the extended slide release. Go here to see how to run the gun without it.

I have fired +p from my SW1911Sc, but as XavierBreath states above, S&W does not recommend firing +p ammunition.

Here's a direct quote from the S&W Owner's Manual, 1911 Series:

""Plus-P" (+P) ammunition is not recommended for use in Smith & Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates that it exceeds established industry standards, but the designation does not represent defined pressure limits and therefore such ammunition may vary significantly as to the pressures generated."

So.... sounds like it's not such a good idea to be using it.

Good luck.

PS: Good pics!

I purchased a Type C Recoil Spring 22# from Brownell's 969-419-220 For use with +p Ammo. I feel its a good Idea Just incase of Bottoming out of slide during Recoil. it also comes with a stronger Firing pin spring for Inertia reduction of pin. The main spring also helps in Reacquisition of Sights for follow up shots (felt recoil reduction).
