My dealer has a S&W 66-2 stainless 2 1/2" and a 66-5 stainless 2 1/2". I have read good things about the 66 and wanted to pick one up. Is the 2 or the 5 better and if so, why? Any enlightenment appreciated.

Yep the 66-2 will have a flash chromed hammer and trigger and a hammer nose firing pin, It will have a pressed in cylinder stop stud rather than a integrally machined stop. The 66-2 will have better roll marks on the frame, and a grooved front and back strap, the 66-5 will be smooth.
OTOH the 66-5 may have some durrability package that the 66-2 doesnt have, it will also have a more nicely integrated rear sight, topstrap and barrel rib. The 66-5 MAY also have a barrel that was rifled by EDM (electrical discharge machining) which will be smoother and easier to clean.
I have a 66-2 that I bought basically new in the box, and its a fine gun.
But I understand that back inthe 80's Bangor Puntas quality control was not the best so inspect the 66-2 carefully, But wait you need to do the same for the 66-5.

I just picked up a 1982 66-2 police trade in from Aim Surplus for $269. Its a fine gun, except for the grips which are a little beaten.

I have a 2.5 inch 66-5 with the internal hammer and it seems like a fine gun.
I would have bought a 66-2 just as happily if I could have found one.

I have the 66-5 with a 4" barrel and like it a lot. The -5 does have MIM hammer and trigger. I'm not aware of what other differences exist between the -2 and -5.
I'll check the SCSW when I get home if you'd like.

I have 66-nothing in 4" that is pinned and recessed. Is the -2 still P&R'd or where along the line did that stop?
I guess I have always gone with the earlier the better but you should grab both to make sure. I will buy the one you dont want.
