I just bought a S&W 681 revolver, and havent got it yet, but was wondering: What are the chances the fixed sights are on (gun shoots to point of aim)? Any S&W owners that shoot with fixed sights, your answer would be appreciated!

I don't have or know of a 681 in use, but one friend's 581 is spot on.

Another's fixed sight M13 shoots a bit low even with 158 grain bullets but not so bad as to matter in short range self defense. It aggravates him at IDPA matches, though.

Yup. The reason that I stated "more or less" is because point of impact depends a lot on an individual's grip. The gun is recoiling while the bullet is still in the barrel. A loose grip will allow the gun to move more...more muzzle flip...and the bullet exits with the barrel at a higher elevation. Heavier grip, and the same ammunition will impact lower.

By the same token, a lighter gun will print higher, all else equal.

Light, fast bullets tend to print lower with a given grip from the same gun because the faster bullet's dwell time in the barrel is shorter, and the muzzle doesn't get as high before the bullet breaks free.

Then, of course, if the lighter bullet generates more recoil than the heavier one...we get to factor that in as well. It gets confusing. For target work in which your desire is for the point of aim and point of impact to coincide...adjustable sights are almost a must for most people. That, and a consistent grip from shot to shot...but all that is what keeps us going back to the range...and that ain't a bad thing.

Thanks Guys, I was hoping to hear they were generally on. I expected the elevation to be different depending on bullet weight/velocity.
I hope you're right as to bullet weight 1911, as I intend to shoot home cast Lyman 358429s in it.

Millions of M10's and 13.s in K-frame along w/stainless brothers & sisters plys the J frames and newer L frames not to mention the big N Frames of yore all can't be too far off. Find the load and you will be happy.

My 681 shoots 158 grain rounds to POA. A very nice revolver.

My ex-TPD 4 inch 681 shoots just a hair to the left at 25 yards with the iron sights, but the Crimson Trace laser is dead on. :D On the other hand, my 3 inch Model 13 is dead on. I don't think you'll have any problems with it. As has already been discussed, different ammo will shoot to different points of impact with the same point of aim.
