S&W 686, any reason not to get the plus?

I personally always like having an extra round, especially if the gun is the same size, so, are there any reasons not to get it? Like durability or timing issues?

I can't think of any. The odd # shot capacity puts the pawl catch in the thick part between the chambers as opposed to right on top of one, which is where the metal would be thinnest. Because of this I think a 7-shot cylinder is no weaker than a 6-shot version.

The only difference is I think that you can only get the 8 shot through the S&W custom shop built on the N frame and the 7 shot can be bought over the counter in the 686.
I love wheel guns but I have small hands and cannot shoot either of these models so I stick with the K frame models 66 & 67. I have had Clarks convert the 67 to use moon clips and it really a joy to shoot.

I could be misunderstanding what you have said larry, but you can buy an 8 shot anywhere just like you could a 7 shot, only difference is yes it is an n frame so if you don't want the extra size and weight you'd be better off with an l frame 686

If you plan on competing in IDPA stock service revolver, the 6-shot is what you want. Otherwise, may as well make it 7, I say.

I haven't found a 7-shot L-frame that had as nice an action as the 6-shot version.

If you can find a 7-shot with a good action out of the box, you'd be the first, so buy it!

I load 2 bullets at a time. 7 is just extra. a 5th wheel if you will. but functionally, no reason at all.

Old men should check before opening there mouths. Several years ago you could only get 8 shooters from the custom shop. I promise to do better the nest time.

I had a 7 shot M619 and it was a great shooter. I mistakenly sold it off to finance the purchase a 6 shot M686 for the local PPC matches at my club. I like the 7th round and you can get 7 round speedloaders from HKS too.

Mine has a great action out of the box.

The only problem is that when ejecting the casings they can get caught up on the grip. That is the only problem I am aware of.

The action on my pre lock, 7-shot, PC 586-5 L-comp is better than almost all my other pre lock 6-shot S&W's. Only my 19-4 rivals it.

My 686-4+ has a very sweet action as well. It is slightly different........I think it is the visual of the cylinder turning faster.....or something. Still a very smooth action, and no worse than any of the 6-shots, to me.

Six or seven has no bearing on action smoothness whatsoever. The 7 shooter will however have a barely noticeable shorter trigger pull. Nothing wrong with either. Both fine guns.

Yes, It is not a Ruger . No reason not to unless you plan on shooting IDPA with it, in which case youw would be better off with the regular version.

Only if, like me, you have an L frame six shot and accessories, and you don't want to buy new accessories for a new revolver.
