I usually don't like buying used gun because of unknown history, but I bought a used smith pistol. How do I get this gun checked out by S&W for overall sound performance?
Is their lifetime warranty ok for 2nd owner? How much do they usually charge for this?
Does anyone know?

try calling S&W.

That is the only way you will get a 100% true answer. Regardless of what we say out here in space you will be the one doing business with them.

Otherwise, I'm sure any gunsmith worth his salt should do it for $20 or less (free) unless there are problems.

good luck!

I was told by them if it's made after 1989, it's covered. The 2-3 times I've dealt with them (wasn't a warranty issue, it was the same situation you have, but with an old revolver) they were extremely courteous and pleasant.

I woud think you need to have an issue rather than "can you check it for me?"

Have it done locally, or show it to a friend that would know.

Bob
