When S&W modifies a production design they assign a dash number to the gun model number. I know that much. What I want to know is, is there a -1 or do the dash numbers start at -2, as in 27-2, 52-2? TIA

Hey-Hey Hey Big G My Friend-

Sorry, but I can't answer your question! But I do have
the 2nd edition of Supica & Nahas book, Standard
Catalog Of Smith & Wesson in front of me, so I will
see if the answer lies twixt these pages?

Right Back At You, Big G :)

I've quickly searched for information regarding the -
numbers used by S&W; without good result's? I'm
fixing to check out the link that popeye has
provided, and see if that tells us anything.

Hey Big G -

My bad bud, I misread your original question! In
a search for the correct answer; well, I have one example
right here in my hand's. You see, I have my dads 2" S&W
model 30 which is a .32 S&W Long caliber "Hand Ejector"
model. Guess what? Its a 30-1 bought NIB back in
1971.

Somewhere I read that when S&W issues a factory recall,
like with the very early model 686's, they simply stamp the
letter "m" beside or over the model number; to show that
the weapon has been modified to include the factory type
upgrade. My personal 686 is a -5 model, so I can't really
confirm that logic?

Depends on the model. The M25 has a limited amount of -1's and the M625 has no -1 models.

What I want to know is, is there a -1 or do the dash numbers start at -2,

Most S&W models had a -1 version.

The original models are often referred to as "Dash Nothing".

Some dash models were made in very small numbers. Such as the Model 25. There were many 25-3 and 25-5 but very few 25-4.
