So the consensus is that it is a factory gun? The only porting that looked identical also had the powerport on the top of the barrel in front of the sight as we'll as the side ports. This one is lacking the top port.
Without doing more research I can't say for sure if the PC at S&W did it or not, but it looks to me like the flash coming out of those ports is not going to be very kind to the front sight ramp and blade.
Per pages 258 & 259 of the Standard Catalogue of S&W, 3rd edition:
Model 629-3 Carry Comp II - slightly different front sight (which yours seems to be, to me), compensator, 3" barrel, unfluted cylinder - 100 manufactured for Lew Horton
I'm not saying the gun in question is definitely one of these, but it seems to fit the bill. I think the Lew Horton website has a list of serial numbers for their models, you could check there. Or call S&W.
Lockup and timing are perfect, I'm beginning to doubt it's factory but the dorsal ports match factory Carry Comp dimensions to a T. I wish it was not ported but it is in perfect condition. If someone finds this to be a factory gun, I'll mail you $20. First person to post proof only. Thanks THR.
I bought a mag-na-ported model 66 2.5" for $500 and I almost tore my pocket trying to get my wallet out fast enough before the seller changed his mind.
I hate porting, but for $550 I'd buy it anyway, factory ports or not. The sights appear to be Meprolight night sights. I have the same ones on my M25-5.
I bought a special run M640 that came from the factory with Mag-na-port porting. Like said above, that does not look like Mag-na-port. I wrote S&W and they told me it was a special run gun and it was factory porting.
Not that it matters really, but after living with my Mag-Na-Ported Model 66 since the late 1980s, I would not port again (mine is a 2.5"). If you shoot anything other than jacketed bullets, you will be scraping lead off the sides of the front sight. In any case you'll be scraping all kinds of gook off of there even if it isn't lead. In addition, the muzzle blast is pretty significant and if you do any night shooting, say goodbye to your night vision! I speak from experience, at least with mine.
Call Lew Horton. If it's one of their's they'll tell you over the phone and send you a nice letter with the details - all for nothing! Great service after the sale, those guys.
I have seen S&W's ported like that, but I don't know if it's factory, done by a distributor, or by the end user.
The porting seems similar to the old "powerports" that came on 686s and 629s a few years back. Those guns like the one pictured, had black ramp sights instead of red because of the flash from the ports. Reason the ports are not in front of the sight like the ''powerports", probably has to do with the short barrel length. $550 for a 629 in great shape? Probably already gone.
