S&W Mod 10 Help please

I have a used (used and tired) S&W Mod 10 that has excessive endshake. I was told this is a simple fix by replacing the bushing in the yolk and using a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the barrel and cylinder.

Any opinions on this? Should I try this myself or should I just bring it to a smith? How much would a smith charge for this?

FYI I fired the gun and it's accurate with my handloads. The action is not that great though as the endshake is causing the cylinder to contact the barrel and it drags.

A gunsmith can fix it. I would leave it with a professional.

It's pretty easy to install some endshake bushings, available from brownell's, for S&W K Frame guns. Just follow the directions that come with the bushings. They come in various sizes so you have to decide which bushings you will need. A good gunsmith shouldn't charge very much for what is a very easy fix.

Were it so easy, but it isn't - not if the job is done right.

First you have to determine of the movement is because of end shake between the frame and yoke, or between the yoke barrel and cylinder. If it is determined that the play is between the yoke barrel and cylinder, the I.D. of the barrel should be reamed (1st. special tool). Then the end of the yoke barrel should be squared (2nd. special tool). After this has been done again check the end shake to determine how many, and what thickness bearings (bushings to you) and installing them. It is not necessary, but advisable to use a (3rd. special tool) to unscrew the ejector rod to prevent bending or scaring it. Look for an earlier post by defairswheel for more complete details.

Bushings can fix it and there is a "yoke stretcher" Brownell's sells for this. It's an easy fix for a good revolver smith.

I checked out brownelles but I couldn't find the part. Any know what it's called how who makes it?

Just send it in to Smith for a rebuild and you will know the job will be done right.

If it has end shake it may have other problems as well. I would take it to a good 'smith and have a total check up and repair.
