My friend's late father left him a S&W Model 10-5 Short 2" Barrel .38 Special.

It has a NICKEL or CHROME finish (I'm not sure how to tell the difference), and it's in about 90% (very good) overall condition.

Any information as to its approximate age and value would be appreciated.

Also, would it be safe to use with +P .38 ammo?

Thanks.

The 10-5 was made from 1962 until 1977. If you want an exact date we will need the serial number.

The factory finish would be nickel.

A 10-2 in 90% condition would likely sell for $150-$250 depending on where it's offered and who is shopping. These came in 2, 4, 5 and 6 inch barrels and the 2" is least common and will often bring a premium.

I think any steel frame S&W starting around WW II is fine with factory +Ps and even those who think this ammo is hot (it isn't) allow that it's probably OK in a gun with a model number stamped on it.

They started doing that in 1957, BTW.

Classic gun. Everyone should have at least one. My 79 year old mother keeps a 5" 10-5 in her nightstand (loaded with +Ps, BTW).

Thatguy and David:

Sincere apologies for hijacking this thread but I urgently need to pose a question to thatguy.

I recently acquired a Model 67-1 stainless steel S&W .38 Spec Revolver. The serial number is ADH 7xxx. When was it made? Is it a newer revolver than one which has AJJ 7xxx as a serial number? Can I presume that it's safe to feed it a diet of WWB or magtech +P .38 special ammo on a frequent basis? By frequent i mean 500 cartridges/month.

I'm not thatguy but...

The ADH prefix gun was made in 1983 and the AJJ prefix gun was made in 1985.

I don't know that I'd feed any .38 Special revolver 500 +P rounds per month.
But your S&W Model 67s should handle it as well as any .38 Special revolver ever made.

I suggest that you call S&W's Customer Service Department and ask them. Who would know better then the company that made the gun?

As for my own opinion: What you propose would be safe, but in time could cause problems such as cylinder end-shake (back & forth movement of the cylinder, as opposed to rotational movement, caused by the cylinder battering the end of the yoke barrel on which the cylinder turns). This is relatively easy to repair, but you should take the possibility into consideration.

S&W will probably disavow the use of +Ps on advice of counsel. They pretty much always say no to +P.

500 rounds a month is a lot of use and the gun will wear more quickly but +Ps (not hot, remember) won't hurt a 67.

Blues Bear can't pass for me. I'm MUCH better looking. :D

Just got word from S&W!

As can be seen from the email response that I got from S&W, it would seem that they OK the use of +P ammo in the model 67. Since the model 10 would be almost identical to the model 67 but w/o the adjustable sights, I say go ahead and run +P through both revolvers.

The email correspondence with S&W is as pasted below for you guys to read.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I recently acquired an S&W Model 67 .38 Special stainless steel revolver. It's serial number is ADH 7xxx. Your website mentions that the model 67 revolver is rated to shoot +P .38 special ammo. Can older model 67s also handle +P rounds?

I suspect that my revolver was built some years ago and hence would like to clarify whether it would be safe to shoot +P .38 Special ammo. I plan on shooting about 500 cartridges every month.

Yours Sincerely,

Thanks for all the information so far.

The Serial Number on his S&W Model 10-5 is: D 670 XXX

Can anyone please date this gun?
