I'm new to this site. I see some of you have similar interests in a particular model of S&W pistol. I have a pristine Model 39, no dash, 9mm pistol with a serial number 80900. Does anyone know about what year it was manufactured? I've been told it was bought in the '50s but the instruction sheet in the box, yes I have the original box, notes that prices for replacement parts are effective January 1, 1960. I have no idea if the instruction sheet is the original one, either.

I had one I bought new in 1968. I still remember the serial number. 83, 856. Hope this helps. They were in high demand in 1968, so I do not think it sat on the dealer shelves long.

I can't be of any help, but a S&W Model 39-2 was my first ever firearm. Got an offer I could not refuse so I sold it, missed it for a time and found a Model 59 to replace it (hated the 59), traded it even for a CZ PCR, never looked back. S&W may give you some information for a fee. When I want to know about a firearms value or when it was being made I go to the bookstore and look it up for free, bring my own coffee too.

The S&W 59 was a bastard child. It was S&W's attempt at the Browning High Power market, but specifically at police who wanted double action as a replacement for their revolvers. It felt like a block in the hand, totally unlike the graceful and natural pointing Model 39. The Model 39, still today, holds a place for style, natural pointing, and ergonomic grip, with just about everyone that has ever handled one or carried one. It is a classic, like the Luger, Browning Hi Power, and HK p7 in the realm of 9mm handguns. The only thing the older 39's could ever want is a trigger job, and maybe throating for hollowpoints. Oh, and maybe ivory grips! Can't put ivory on a Glock too easily..........
