I am replacing the stupid Hi-Vis sights on my S&W model 66......tell me what you think

1. Rear sight: Plain black Vs. White outline

2. Front sight: Plain black Vs. Red ramp

This is for a self defense gun, not a bullseye pistol. I want something that stands out, so I am leaning toward the red ramp front now. I have the white outline sights on my glock and i hate them, however glocksights are junk plastic, and I expect a white outline sight from S&W to be much better. Please help me dicide....

I vote for plain black unless you are using tritium night sights.

Lines and dots and colors get all kinds of confusing in the stress of a gunfight.

Given your intended use ...

The plastic red inserts in S&W sights work O.K. in good light, but go drab in low-light conditions. In low light, green or yellow are better colors. Before I changed the sights I would borrow a gun at a dealers for a few minutes and look at the sights under low light. I would also consider a Crimson Trace laser sight. As a personal choice I prefer a gold (brass) front sight insert over a red plastic one. White outlines around the rear sight work well in low-light, less so in bright light.

Check out Millet white outline rear sights. I got a 4" 686 that already had one installed and I wasn't sure if I would like it. It looks GREAT! It's also sturdier and has better adjustment than stock, for about the same price. Let me know if you want to get rid of that hi-viz, I could always use a spare for my 3" 66.

I'd also highly recommend the Millett sights. As an option, you could install a Meprolight tritium-insert front sight with the Millett rear, giving you a better night-fighting capability.
