Hello,

I am not sure if this post belongs here, but I know of few other places to get the best possible answer to my question :). So my apologies if it is a breach of protocol.

I am putting together a road-trip with the family and would like to avoid trouble. Trouble meaning picking the wrong town to stay overnight in (ie. crime). Obviously, there are no guarantees in anything, but if I could get guidance from the collective wisdom of this community, I would most appreciate it.

The road trip is from northeast Massachusetts to Cleveland, Mississippi. We are taking a slightly different route there+back, but these are the towns I have picked so far to stay in:

(trip there)
Allentown, PA
Charleston, VW
Nashville, TN
Cleveland, MS
(trip back)
Knoxville, TN
Hagerstown, MD

I will be staying at any hotel along the lines of Hampton Inn, Ramada, Courtyard, etc. I'm getting too old for super cheap hotels theses days.

Any thoughts on these towns as way points? (we won't be stopping for much along the way, just food + sleep)
Thanks much!!

The state of Mississippi conciders your vehicle to be an extention of your home and therefore anything that is legal to posess in your home (like a firearm) is perfectly legal in your car. The only exception is open containers of alcoholic beverages. Mississippi is also a Castle Doctrin state.

Nashville is pretty good, especially if you stay in the "touristy" places. I assume you'll be going through Memphis then down into the Mississippi Delta. Memphis has a LOT of pretty rough areas, and the Mississippi Delta can be pretty cold toward outsiders. Cleveland isn't too bad, some of the smaller towns can be a bit unfriendly. I'm a native Mississippian but I sometimes was treated like an outsider in the Delta because I was from the Gulf coast of Mississippi.

Id steer clear of Hagerstown. It had its spots before the economy took a dive. Frederick might be an alternate (maybe)

Traveling in Mississippi you will see a lot of Kudzu vine, chicken farms, and abandoned houses. :D

Never been in a "unfriendly" place in Mississippi though. Most of my family live in various parts of the state.

I used to live on the coast (The Pass and Bay St. Louis) and I am here to tell you it IS a different world.

PS: He might want to remove any Obama bumper stickers and replace them with Rebel flag stickers somewhere in Tennessee.

Vacation

Try the Drury Inns on the way. They are nice and have two FREE meals (both night meal and hot breakfast).
