what's a sage rat, is it just a rat that lives in the sage fields?

I've hunted tree rats, but we don't have "sage" down here.

I love to hunt squirrel and rabbits. I'd be dumping money on ya if I lived up there. A reasonable day in the field.

I"d figure "dry camping" means that you bring all your own water--which I generally do, anyhow.

sage rats live in the alfalfa fields and you can sit in the corner of the field or drive around in your vehicle and shoot all day long. check out youtube sage rat hunting. camping spots are available without hookups. there is also the option of two local hotels. we also have LOP tags for mule deer and lots of pronghorn.

Me used to hunt sage rats south of La Grande Oregon in the 90s.

I will say they are an excellent time with lots and lots of shooting. In fact the 1st year I did it, I ran out of ammo for four rifles after two days. Are you going to be doing this next year also? Is this centerfire... 223 22-250 ect and rimfire or just rimfire only?

Sounds like something my .22 mag would be good for. It's a little much for tree rats.

Hollowpoint .22LR Mini-Mags do a number on the things. That's "walking around" shooting.

A .22WMR would be good at 100 yards or more.

However, these things are fun to shoot while walking around with a scoped Marlin 60.

There are a lot of them down a dirt road just south of my house. They aren't big, so you don't have to shoot from 400 yards to make it interesting. Picture a 6" tall prairie dog-looking thing, maybe a bit smaller. They dig burrows that look like they're full-size prairie dogs, though.

Well, I've always heard that called "primitive camping" (i.e. we supply a square of land; you do the rest), so I thought surely "dry camping" meant something more - I mean less - as in "primitive camping on a patch of flora-less sand, and water not allowed!" or something.

"SAGE RATS" are a smaller version of the prarie dog. His technical name is Merrills Ground Squirrel. They picked up there nick name from predominantly being present in high desert regions where the sage brush is dominant. Just as with most of these types of rodents if you take desert and turn it into pasture they move right in digging holes everywhere and they breed like rats therefore the name Sage Rat. He is about the size of the larger Golden Mantle breed of chipmonk and great sport. If you get a chane to book a good rat shoot on an infested ranch take no less than 3 guns with you ranging from an accurate .22 capable of 100 yd. (or better) accuracy and whatever else small bore you may have that is cheap to shoot . Bring lots of ammo , a cleaning kit for all of your guns and if you can a portable shooters bench. I have personnally had 1,000 round (+) days starting out shooting the close ones with my custon 10-22 and then to a 17 HMR and a .223 haveing to alternate between the last 2 and let them cool off . Finally clean them, move your sooting site not much more than a 1/4 mile and start over. Some of the ranchers give a bounty for Badgers and makes for a bonus day .
