Thinking about a Saiga .308, which is just dandy here in SC, but possibly moving to MN. Doing a folding stock/pistol grip conversion would be a possibility, but somewhere along my research, I thought I found an anecdote that folding stocks were a no-no in MN, so I went to check it out ..
At http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/bin/getpub.php?pubtype=STAT_CHAP_SEC&year=2007§ion=624.712
I see:
[blockquote].. Subd. 7. Semiautomatic military-style assault weapon. "Semiautomatic military-style
assault weapon" means:
(1) any of the following firearms:
(i) Avtomat Kalashnikov (AK-47) semiautomatic rifle type;
...
(2) any firearm that is another model made by the same manufacturer as one of the firearms
listed in clause (1), and has the same action design as one of the listed firearms...[/blockquote]
Since the Saiga is an AK action, this means the Saiga, even in "sporter" form is a semi-automatic miltary-style assault weapon...
But then I pulled up http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/bin/getpub.php?type=s&num=624.713&year=2007
which states:
[blockquote]624.713 CERTAIN PERSONS NOT TO POSSESS FIREARMS.
Subdivision 1. Ineligible persons. The following persons shall not be entitled to possess a
pistol or semiautomatic military-style assault weapon...[/blockquote]
The implication seems that unless you are specifically prohibited on that list (mental illness, prior record, etc.), it's perfectly fine to own any of those weapons they just spent all that time describing in detail.
I can't see WHY they would define semi-auto military assault weapons - with specific models to be added to the list as necessary, unless the definition were legislatively used. Only thing I can figure is that if you are mentally ill or have a prior record, you are not allowed to own semi-auto assault weapons BUT you are still allowed to own hunting rifles. Which seems remarkably progressive, which is why I can't believe I'm reading it right.
It would seem that the Saiga would be fine, and even doing the folding/pistol conversion would be fine, (so long as it was ok under federal), but I thought I'd see if anyone with knowledge of law or of MN might make a suggestion.
