Savage 10FCM Scout Rifle vs Marlin 336

So I am intriqued by the Savage 10FCM Scout Rifle. .308, scout rifle forward scope mount...and the really intriguing thing is that it comes with a rear apeture sight...not sure how good...but with my eye-sight, I am bound to shoot better with that than any leaf or buckhorn type sight mounted on the barrel.

Love the Marlin 336 of course and I know there are excellent after-market apeture sights for that and that's the way I'd go there. Not much anybody need say about the 336...can't go wrong.

I am looking for sort of an all purpose truck gun, farm gun, SHTF repeater with some oomph. Kind of a "one gun" kind of a thing. Semi-autos are a whole different thought process for me - saving money for maybe an FS2000 or maybe the Sig 556.

So how about the Savage 10FCM? Other than the 4 round capacity, this seems like about the only stock bolt-action functional equivilent of something like a 336. Anybody familiar with the Savage 10FCM? Any thoughts on the gun?

The CZ 527 Carbine is probably the only stock bolt-action functional equivalent of the 336.

Not sure about the Savage, apart from the price premium for its being a "Scout" rifle. Savage makes other iron-sight guns AFAIK.

As for me, I'd just get the Marlin, possibly in stainless -- more expensive, but less to worry about if you leave it in a truck a lot.

So Bear...the Savage is expensive then? The MSRP is like $675 I think...which is a lot more than a 336 I know. I have just never actually seen one in person.

I am considering the Savage too. I also am looking at the Mitchell Mauser "Tanker", a 17.5" .308 mauser, and the Ruger frontier. The mauser has better sights than the rest, the Ruger is on sale near me for $450.00.

I did buy a CZ 527 and like it very much. It is light and the trigger is amazing. But I would like adjustable sights.

The 336w .30-30 was $347 at walmart last week.

Ive done a lot of reading over at marlinowners.com and for an "all purpose" 336 it was generally agreed up on that this setup is near perfect.

Are you looking at using iron sights, BTW?

The Scout sights are meant as backups. A decent IER scope would boost your price $250 or more.

Saw some 700 laminated stock rifles at Wally World a few weeks ago, on sale for well under $400 with good sights on them. I'd get one of those, or the 336.

I guess I kind of see this two ways..If you think you are going to shoot over 200 yards on a regular basis, I would go with the Savage or the Ruger. Both are really nice rifles. I have the Ruger and love it. The .308 is going to give you more range and power.

If you think most of your shooting will be inside of 200 yards then I would get the Marlin 336. They are darn near indestructable and shoot very accurately. Hornaday Leverevolution puts a few more yards on the .30-30 if you think you need it. If you don't, you have tons of great ammo to choose from and it is available everywhere. The 336 has lots of sighting options and can easily be set up for a traditional scope or a scout scope. There are lots of scout set ups over on the Marlin Owner's Forum mentioned in an earlier post.

Personally I would choose the 336 for a all around truck/beater/SHTF rifle. They are simple, accurate, and fairly cheap to buy.
