I'm looking to get a scout type of gun and was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Savage model 10FCM. My old man has one on order, but it won't show up for a few months since the owner of the shop is out of commission.

Why not just go somewhere else and order it? Most gunshops can get you any gun, even it they don't stock that brand.

I have a scout set up on my Mauser M48 and love it, but no experiance with the Savage. I can' imagine that this is any different in look and feel than any other Savage Mod 10 so ask around.

Oh, he already ordered it, it's in the shop waiting for him but the owner isn't coming in to the shop because he had his hip replaced.

How did you make your Mauser in to a scout rifle if you don't mind my asking?

The Savage Scout's are hard to find. Savage, will only produce a rifle when they get a certain certain amount of orders for a particular rifle from distributors. They don't just make up a bunch and store them waiting for orders to come in.

I had one briefly about a year ago and sold it. Nothing wrong with them, but I just didn't like it.

The Savage scout just did not fill a niche for me. Savage has recently redesigned their guns and are now using steel triggerguards and bottom metal along with a better stock. Improvements, but they also made the guns heavier. The Scout rifle I had was a full pound heavier than Savage lists them on their website.

I can recommend them as well made guns, but I already had other guns that filled the same role that were lighter, more compact and were more accurate. I had a chance to sell it for what I had in it and let it go. I tried the scout scope idea and decided a low powered scope mounted conventionaly works better for me.

What other guns that you have fit the bill of the Scout in a lighter package?

I replaced the rear sight ficture of m M48 with a foward scope mount and mounted a Leupold 2.7 fixed power scout scope ( I think it's 2.7). It was easy. It's kind of heavy, but I don't care as I really don't carry it.
I love the concept and utility though. One day, I'll replace the stock and lighten it etc.

My Savage Scout weighed 7 1/4 lbs.

At the time I had a Remington Model 7 that was 6 1/4 lbs. and was equally as accurate. No longer have this gun either.

I have a stainless Ruger MK-2 that I have added iron sights to that weighs 7 lbs even. It is a bit more accurate than the Savage.

My Tikka weighs 6 lbs 2 oz. It is way more accurate as well as cheaper than the Savage or Remington.

I sold several guns, including the Remington and Savage, to finance the new Kimber I have recently bought. It weighs 5 lbs 2 oz and so far is right up there with the Tikka in accuracy.

I have listed all weights without scopes. The Tikka is in 30-06, the others are 308.

If you really, really want the scout scope set-up the Savage, or Ruger Frontier is probably the easiest way to go. I decided it was not the best method to mount a scope for me.

Another thing to remember is that the Savage package guns sold at Walmart and other chains are great bargains for the money. Buying one of the other Savage rifles will cost as much or more than a comparable Ruger, Remington, or Tikka. I did some work for someone and received my Savage Scout as partial payment, so I had almost nothing in the gun.
