I'm looking to buy my first bolt-action rifle and I think I want a Savage 10flp in .308 (I'm lefty). I was wondering if I should be able to find one that takes detachable magazines and, if not, are they easy to convert myself?

If they're tricky or expensive to convert, would I be better off buying a righty version of the Savage 10fp with detachable mags and just switching out the action to a left-handed version?

Not sure about your question.
The 10FP is nice. I got a couple hole in ones. 100 yds.
And some nice small groups.
You will be amazed at the recoil.:D

The 10FP doesn't have a detachable magazine nor does anyone offer anything so modified. Savage does make models with detachable magazines however none in the LE line. The issued recoil pad on the Savage stock is their version of cast in place concrete intended to mimic the look of rubber! Not a big deal to replace.

I'd definitely be getting rid of the factory stock based on what I've heard about them! Is converting them to take magazines as trivial as popping out the blind magazine and inserting a mag well without using any special tools, though? If not, I'd have to give my purchase some additional thought.

No sorry to rain on your parade but they simply aren't that simple. The fixed magazine rifles use an entirely different setup from what I've seen. Further, the stocks need not only an opening for the magazine but they also need a hole for the magazine release button. Something to consider is that precious few "tactical" bolt actions sport detachable magazines, presumably this is because a blind magazine would be second only to a single shot in terms of structural stability (the cornerstone of accuracy minded gunsmiths). Oh and from what I've seen, the replacement stock options universally exclude detachable magazine models.

Rumor has it that the 08 model tactical rifles will have detachable mags, heard it on savageshooters.net.
There are conversions availible, but they arent cheap.
This is my only real gripe about the fp series.

Davo, that is very interesting! I have a buddy "on the fence" as they say who'd almost certainly buy a 10FP if it had detachable mags. The upside (for him) is that he won't have the money for another year anyhow!
