I am looking at getting a deer rifle for my daughter, who shoots left handed (right handed but left eye dominant). I want to get an old Savage 99 in 243 or 308, and rebarrel it to 260. Anyone done this, know where to get a repalcement barrel, etc? I saw an old post on this but no details and it was several years old.

Poor, You need to make sure you get the correct model that will accept the longer .308win. There are some Savage 99's that were manufactured pre-.308 in such cartridges as the .300savage and they will not chamber the .308win. Any of them with a detachable magazine will of course be fine as they were made well after .308win came along.

As far as getting the barrel made, be ready to spend some bucks. I would also recommend you send it off to either the barrel maker to fit it up or a VERY good gunsmith that is familiar with the particulars of a Savage 99. They can be picky buggers to say the least.

I shoot a 308 Savage 99 and love that rifle. I'd suggest just look for one already in that caliber. Maybe trade the one you have, if you have one.

You can email Arizona Response Systems. The gun smith there refinished mine and did some barrel work. He can tell you if he's interested in the job? I think he has a soft spot for working on Savage 99's. Not every gun smith likes them.

It would be better to just find one and let her shoot it in the caliber that it already is. The 250 Savage round is plenty capable.

With Remington 250 Savage being a seasonal run, that brand can be hit or miss for availability. There are several custom loads available, but more expensive.
Here's a link to Reed's Ammo.

Of course the answer for hard to find ammo is to reload, if you're up to the task. Not everyone wants to attempt it, but it's not difficult if you can pay attention to details.

I once had a scoped M99 in 250 Savage myself, and handloaded for varmints with it, and the accuracy was quite good.

I've had good luck with PCI. I see they are out of stock right now, but you can always stock up when it's available :)

Shipping from Graf & Son is a few bucks and they have good customer service.

Point is, there are a lot of Savage 250 Model 99's out there. So, if you come across one don't be put off by the ammo thing. Better if you come across a 308, but I would never hesitate to get out my wallet for a nice 99 in 250 Sav. They are a rifle you will always get you money back on, or maybe make some :)

There is also this option: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM931-1.html I've had decent luck with Bitter Root Valley too :)
