I'm looking to get into bolt action rifles (been an AR15 man for most of my adult shooting career), but I'm not exactly flush with cash right now :(. I've heard good things about Savage as far as value-for-money goes, and was interested in picking up one of these babies: https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/70966

Anybody got one? Horror Stories? Tales of Success?

Edit: Looked at more reviews on Bud's looking really good, the buy button calls to me...

I don't have one but, have seen a lot of praise about them being good shooters. I've got a model 10fp in .223 that shoots really well like pretty much all Savages do. :)

I have one in .223 that I love. Smoked a prarie dog at 325 yards yesterday and can do it on a regular basis. They do have a slightly rough trigger out of the box but can be improved greatly with a little light polishing. I also did the DIY trigger spring job that lightened it a couple pounds. They now sell an aftermarket trigger that cost almost as much as the rifle if you really don't like money. I would also recommend threadlocking all the bolts.

I can punch one ragged hole at 100 almost every range trip. They will shoot steel cases ammo but the bolt does tend to stick slightly every now and then with it. I also shoot some American tactical brand 5.56 m855 with excellent results but of course my best groups come with reloads.

I looked at one first of this year but, in 243. I saw one at a local gun shop. I thought it was a very good looking and good quality gun. but, when I went to get one nobody had them in stock or could not order one so I got the marlin xs7 in 243. My marlin has the adjustable tigger and after I got it bore sighted I was able to about a 2 inch group at 50 yard with even adjusting the sights. The savage axis is a good rifle hope this helps

My nephew and I both have Savage Axis rifles in .223, and my brother-in-law has one in .243. They are good shooters, no problems at all so far. With a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x scope mounted on it, my rifle shoots sub-MOA groups from a rest. The other 2 rifles shoot just about as well, MOA groups at 100 yards. Haven't done any long range shooting yet, but I expect them to be fine at longer ranges as well. The triggers on all 3 rifles are somewhat heavy, and the fit and finish won't set your world on fire, but they are reasonably priced straight shooting rifles. YMMV.

I have one in .223 aswell and i can testify that they r moa capable with handloads. I mounted the 4-12 power redfield scope on mine with leopold rongs and a picatiny rail added later from egw. Works great. Got mine at walmart for $267.00 and the scope was $210.00 at cabelas.

My Savage is a model 11. It is a great rifle. The Axis rifles I've looked at seemed to be fine.
