Hi,

I recently purchased a savage edge in 308. I'm going to use it for target shooting mostly; to try my hand at longer ranges. Currently though I only have access to a 100 yard max range. I've been searching around, anyone know what distance I can use to get a decent sight in at 300 yards with 150gr 2800fps bullets? Can i use a system like battle zero for the ar15 with a 308?

Thanks,
Gary

Well without any more specifics, the exterior ballistics software that came with my bro's Nightforce puts it something like this:

With the sight 1.5 inches above the bore, the standard atmospheric conditions, and a Sierra Gameking (BC = .38) @ 2800 fps, you're looking at 4.7 inches high at 100 yards, and just shy of 6 inches high at midrange with a 300 yard zero. This puts you about 13 1/2 inches low at 400 yards and 36 1/2 inches low at 500 yards.

MTMilitiaman,

So I would have to sight it 4.7 inches high at 100 yards to get it around zero at 300?

I believe so. It should be somewhere close to that. As usual, software is still just a scientific WAG, so you will probably have to confirm and fine tune on the range, but sighting in around 4.5 inches high at 100 yards should get you at least on paper at 300.

Well, the only problem with what MTMilitiaman said is this. About everything. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to give you any valid ballistic calculations without load data. That 4.7 inches high @100 could very well be correct if you are using the load he calculated on. But if he calculated that for a 150 grain SGK sitting on say 45.5grains H335 then that MAY be close. But if you have some factory loaded Win's then it very well wont even be in the ballpark. We need the load data to be able to help you.
