I just picked up a Savages Arms Mark II in 22 Long Rifle and it is drilled for scope mounts already and I was just hoping someone could recommend a good scope base mount for this weapon? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

-specifically I saw several options some traditional weaver style mounts and a new style picatinny rail system. Could anyone offer opinions on what would be the best mounting system for this firearm? Planing to use this rifle for mostly target shooting at this time at distances under 200 yards most likely.

If you want to add some MOA & have a Picatinny :

I have come to really like the pic rails. Scopes become interchangeable to some degree. The mount is universal. Ring height may not work between two guns. It is a repeatable system for holding zero when removing & replacing a scope.

The downside on a rimfire is if you lose the ability to swap between scope & irons or add too much height to the mounting.

An inclined base on a .22...that's just a glutton for punishment. Good wind reading trainer I guess.

I like minimal bases on a small rifle. Combine a set of Burris Signature Zee rings to a pair of low profile Weaver bases and you have a nice looking quality setup for that rifle.

The only time I really prefer a full Piccitinny rail is if I need to bridge a long action or I have a heavy scope that is going to be mounted in some substantial rings.

This is what I was going to recommend.

Watch for holes that aren't aligned perfectly on that rifle. I had that problem on my Mk II. I shimmed my bases to make them work right but the best choice is a single piece base because you will know you're in alignment on the bases if you use a one piece. Not only did I have side to side but the height wasn't perfect either. It's best to check with the right gauges and still use a one piece mount. Here's one place to get various quality mounts for your Savage. There are several places to get them but I know these products are good. I have one on my MkII.

With the offset bushings available for the Signature Zee rings, alignment is a non-issue. If things are off, going with a one-piece base isn't going to help. All that will happen is that either the base will be warped by being tightened to the receiver, the base won't line up with the holes and can't be used at all or the base ends up not making very good contact with the receiver and leads to a wandering zero because it isn't tight.

Zee rings won't fix everything.
For clarity's sake it's the Signature series rings that get the gob done. Basic Zee rings are nothing more than Burris's Weaver rings, the Signature Zee rings add the polymer bushings. And if 40+ MOA can't fix the problem...shims are great for height differences, but they don't do a lot for windage.

And most people that I know hold for wind.
