I sure got a lot of years good use out of my Savage 110L in 30-06. I used that rifle in Alaska for over 30 years and it produced a lot of moose and caribou in my freezer. It would easily hold a 1" group at 100yds from a rest. I never though it's recoil was that bad, I used to plink with an '03 Springfield which has a steel buttplate. Back in the '60s you could buy military surplus 30-06 ammo cheap, I got several batches from Montgomery Wards for about $25 for 800rds. WWII surplus but they all worked just fine for hunting.
Now you want to talk about recoil try a .338 or a .458 Winchester. Those recoil.

Squirrelhunter: You probably fixed the barrel bedding problem, but it sounds like the action doesn't fit tightly into the stock. To remedy that, go to Home Depot or other hardware store and buy a package of JB Weld to bed the action to the stock. Don't put it under the recoil plate, but around the bearing areas at both front and rear screws.

I use light paste wax shoe polish for release compound on the metal parts and grease stock screws heavily to allow them to release. Be sure to clean out the screw holes after bedding to prevent bottoming-out on cured epoxy.

You can find more information on bedding, but you don't need to get too involved with pillars and other tricks unless you want a super-accurate rifle.

BTW: Recoil with Savage stocks tends to seem worse than other rifles. One poster on a board called it, well, "Savage". It's got to do with stock angle and I've heard it from many people. My 1960s, 110 original stock kicked the heck out of me, but a replacement Fajen stock tamed it, even without a recoil pad.

Kicks like a freight train........ That doesn`t help . It`s all relavent though.
You didn`t say if you re-sighted your weapon. If not , get-er done. :)

"Kicks like a freight train" Eh?
Try going to Midway USA and buy their Uncle Mikes slip on recoil pad.
It's less than 15.00 and will help to make your freight train into an SUV.
Easy to install or remove, just not very pretty.
