Savage model 24 D .22lr/20 gauge

The Savage model 24 has been with us since 1939, they saw limited service as a survival arm with air crews in WWII and were a handy tool for farmers and campers, etc... I had wanted one awhile and recently found this 70s vintage example .22 LR over 20 gauge. In recent years they have become rather sought collectables. Viewed by many as a utility tool and used hard you don't often see them this nice so I thought I would share it.

I had the 24C for a while before someone else wanted it more than I did. The "Camper's Companion" as it was known was also .22 over 20 gauge and the 20 was Cylinder bore. Loaded with buck or slug, it was a camp safety gun while the 22 was fun for plinking

I wss on an Ontario moose hunt that turned into an Ontario grouse hunt due to the lack of moose in the area late in the season. We had so much fun shooting grouse with a Savage 24 that our guide had. When I got home, I HAD to have one. I finally found a .22/.410 with awesome wood. I paid dearly for it, but I have one ready for my next "moose" hunt.

It's not unusual to see a mod24 with excellent wood.

One of the most useful guns I've owned. Mine was a Stevens IIRC, basically the same thing in 22 LR/20 ga, with a hardwood stock. Great "pot hunting" gun. I loved it for squirrel hunting which runs pretty much the same time as deer season here in Virginia. I'd keep the shotgun barrel loaded with buckshot, and use the 22 for squirrels.

Sorry I traded that one off.

I've got one, a .22LR/410, I bought it from a hardware store, a trade-in, I gave $50 for it. I've put about 20 coats of lemon oil on the stock and fore end, beautiful little rifle combo. You got great find! Mine is an early model, a small round button on the RT side for barrel selection.

I have my old man's 20/22, he used it almost exclusively for his small game gun in his mid to latter years, reaping many a ruffed grouse rabbit and squirrel in mid Wisconsin.

I went on quite a few hunts with him, carrying a nylon 66, which I still have also. He taught me all I know about hunting and carrying a firearm in the woods from about 8 years old.

I have never shot it(the Over/under), since his old stomping grounds are long gone now, along with him.

I have a bit more rare Model 24V .357 magnum over 20 gauge. Surprisingly accurate out to 100 yards with the .357.

Thanks Fred, I did a bit more research and can pin this down to circa 1974-1976. In 74 at some point they dropped the game scene (missing from mine) and in 1976 they stopped checkering the forearm.

I have an older 24 with birch furniture that's a .22LR over 20 gauge, and a later 24C that's also .22LR/20 gauge, in the tan vinyl takedown carrying case. And there's a .30-30/20 and a .223/12 as well. They're great utility guns, and I'm sorry to see them priced so high these days on the used market - which is where all mine save the 24C came from.

I recently just picked up a model 24v, 223/20 gauge. Great shooter. Been wanting one for years and just so happen this fell in my lap out of the blue. Couldn't pass it up. As a bounus......the guy through in 5 boxes of 223.

I had a .22 WMR/.410 in the early '60s. If the wood had been half that nice I might have kept it. It was okay, but the .22 mag turned out to be too expensive for me.

Mine is 22 magnum over 20 gauge.

My father bought it off my uncle in the late '70s and he gave it to me in '84.
Still looks brand new actually since its been very lightly used.
Yeah, it holds the special place in the toybox.
Heck, I still remember sitting in my uncles hallway staring in his gun case at it in the mid '70s.
