I am in a position to purchase a model 720 Savage 12 Gauge for around $200. This gun is in fair to good position with minor pitting on the receiver and barrel as well as some nicks and bumps in the stock. Does anyone have any info on this Savage. I have never seen a Savage Semi-auto 12 and would probably use it for hunting whitetail.

I just found the search option for the discussion forums and I believe I have found most of the information I was looking for on this Savage.

That Savage 720 is another version of the Browning Auto 5. It is a good solid gun and $200 would be OK, but I wouldn't go any higher. It has the same friction ring system as the Auto 5 and you need to know how to adjust it for the appropriate loads.

I believe all those were made for 2 3/4 inch shells, but if in doubt take it to a gunsmith to check the chamber.

Care, cleaning and field stripping are like the Auto 5. I do not recommend disassembly beyond field stripping.

Thanks Jim, I do have a Browning A5 12 gauge that I am "holding on to" for my uncle(he has problems with his children getting in to his firearms), but I would like to have one of my own and thought maybe this Savage would be close enough.
