There is a fella I know who recently came in possetion of a Model 840 and is missing the bolt he simply wants to find out if the bolt from a Model 340 (A or B) will fit properly. I have been very unsucceful in finding out, I own a 340b .30-30 and hesitate to let him try and fit test my bolt in his gun. any help is appriciated.

Hello, welcome to the monkey house! I don't know the answer to your question other than to say that if it does fit there may be headspace issues. I will bet someone on the forum has the answer

That's a definite NO ! Don't swap bolts. If you do find one that fits take it and the rifle to someone with the knowledge to check and adjust headspace if it is possible.

Stay safe, and welcome to the forum.

Different part numbers will rule out them being an exact fit. Numerich or Jack Furst would be my places to try and find a replacement though. You could both take your rifles to a knowledgeable gun smith and let him see if they were able to SAFELY interchange or what it would entail to make him one. FWIW swapping parts is a good way to get hurt if you do not really know your stuff with firearms.
