I had a ragged out M1917 I finally sold. I had a M19, wasn't all THAT accurate with .38, though better than my Security Six, but I sold it. I wound up with a very accurate Taurus 66, very nice trigger, too, for a medium frame 4" .357. I have a M10 now, early 60s vintage. I cracked the forcing cone on the pencil barrel and found a heavy barrel in a shotgun news for 50 bucks and had it installed. It balances better for me now, anyway. I never was in love with that pencil barrel. That one was an inheritance, so it goes no where even though it's just an old M10, nothing special, 4" square butt. If it was a round butt, I'd get a 2" barrel for it and might use it more. But, I have a snub, Taurus 85SSUL, that I carry. Superb little carry .38.
I haven't bought a Smith in quite a while. The lock has me put off and the price of the no lock ones keeps going stupid high due to demand from those who feel like me. I'm simply not going to give 400 bucks for a loose K frame.
My Taurus 66 was like new, early 90s model 6 shot, tight, perfect timing, beautifully smooth trigger that's just as good as my M10, $197 at a gun show. It's 1" at 25 yards accurate with wadcutters and 140 grain Speer magnums and 1.5" accurate with a cast, gas checked 158 SWC over 14.5 grains of 2400. Best shootin' medium frame gun I've yet owned for less than 200 bucks.
I'll sell, trade, this and that guns I don't care for too much for ones I think I might want. In over 30 years, I've pretty well settled on the ones I like. I'm really not too into autos. I've been there, done that, gave 1911s up for lint. I prefer DAs or DAOs. My P90 is accurate to the max, reliable, decent trigger. It's my favorite big auto. I carry a Kel Tec P11, like that one a lot, too. So, I'm used to being bashed by the snobs for my choices, but they're my choices and they have proven themselves excellent to my standards. I'm not so worried about looks or such as I am simple performance. The gun must be accurate and reliable most of all and a rugged design doesn't hurt. Trash the Taurus if you will, but I bet the forcing cone will never crack. It's a round forcing cone, tougher than a K frame design. Having cracked a K frame forcing cone, I kinda like that. L frames are cool, GP100s are strong, but a K frame is the right weight for my hip. I really haven't explored the heavier options.
I might hold my nose and ignore the hole for a M60 Magnum 5" with adjustable sights. I'd like to play with one of those. It strikes me as perhaps a great little trail/hiking gun, lighter than a K frame. I sorta like the 642, also, though I never bought one. There are Smiths I like, but I don't limit myself to one brand, not at all.
