Thanks for the update. I have not seen a .444 Marlin in years. As I recall they had Micro Groove barrels. I expect the new ones have Ballard cut rifled barrels as well?
Yes, the newer 1-20" barrels have Ballard rifling.

I ran across one a few years ago for an unbelievable $250 but it was the slow twist, Microgroove type.

I bought an 1895 at the Ft Benning PX in 1974. When I got back from Korea in 1976, I put a Weaver K3W scope on it, and worked up a load with 300 gr FP & HPs using 53 gr of 3031. It groups 1" at 100 yds on sand bags, has killed umpteen deer, and I have never had to re-zero it even dragging it around in the military over 30-something years. It has the micro groove barrel, and though at one time I toyed with re-barreling it with cut rifling, it shoots 300-350 gr hard lead bullets just fine. With the factory curved buttplate, 405 gr or heavier bullets are for those with bionic shoulders or masochists. A good pad would make a difference; I wouldn't trade or sell it for the world...

Is the Walmart close out over? At that price I'd have to give in and buy one.

The nature of a closeout is to sell what you have. You might get lucky and find one on the shelf somewhere. I did see a local WM today that had one of the B Mags on the shelf at the close out price.

I got back from Iraqi Freedom in 2013. Lost my job while I was gone and unemployment was the word of the day. Got a job in the fall and when my birthday came around, my wife brought home a stray 1895G in 45-70 that she got used from the local gun shelter (dealer). Price $350.00. The person who had it didn't like the kick. Got a deer the first time out with it at a distance of 25 yards. She has passed 11 years ago at 38. I won't sell that rifle for anything. Its my go to rifle.
