Just to be a little different, I'd say a good quality .22lr since I shoot them more than all of the others (combined if truth be known).

Probably just pick a plain jane vanilla Ruger MKII w/ fixed sights, a few bricks and have fun.

Good for plinking at all sorts of targets or putting food in pot, cheaper to feed, etc. and I'm sure that when we all meet at some range somewhere, you're ALL going to want to shoot my little .22 while I borrow your big boys for a string or two

Dang, which one of my stable do I chose? Government, Officer's, Commander?
The .22 conversion unit would come along. As would all the Wilson mags. And spare parts I have collected over the years.
A reloading press..
Overseas? Not likely, too old to play grunt in the grass and the land of the 'free' is one of the last places you can easily get and keep a fine handgun. Been there, done that....(and carried a 1911A1!)
If I had time to 'get ready' for this one gun thing, I might go ahead and give Caspian a call for a officer's sized titanium frame, commander length damascus slide and all the high quality internals to go with.
Whatever....it would be a 1911 .45 auto!

I think I agree with Tamara on this one. I'd definitely go with one of my 1911's, and after some thought I'd have to say my Springfield Pro would be the one. It's 100% reliable. It's been tested more thoroughly than perhaps any other pistol. Durable. Accurate. Concealable if need be. Parts are widely available. And as any 1911, fairly easy to work on.

SIG 220ST in .45 ammo should be able to found even over seas for occasional recreational use or I could bring said ammo.

P7M8 is my second choice but only second by a very small margin.

If we are talking about a dangerous, war, SHTF situation where I am stuck over seas or anyplace else where .45 is not readily available I just shoot some other poor schmuck and liberate his weapon(s).

Going to extremes, the two favorites I would have to choose between are the Hi-Power and the Ruger P95. Yeah, I know, but the choice is not all that clear cut between them (for me). Different but both great pistols.

Probably a H&K P2000 LEM .40. It's a do-it-all kind of gun and durable enough to last a lifetime without needing replacement parts other than a few recoil and magazine springs.
