Senate Staffer Busted For Carrying Webb’s Loaded Gun

Reminds me of Sandy Burglar. The Royalty does not have to abide by the same rules as us lowley serfs.

:fire:

Statement by Jessica Smith, Webb Communications Director:

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the Senator's aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts." Developing...

What a crock of bovine excrement!!! Webb better do a lot more than try to bury this, because he will HOUNDED by us serfs.

I didn't realize Webb was a Marine. They teach officers to give individuals under them as much responsibility as possible but to always take the blame if their men make mistakes, so I'm sure Webb will get it cleared up. That plus the stupid judicial term where you can claim that you made the biggest goof of your life in an obvious situation (bringing gun thru metal detector) means this will probably be a non-issue.

....an unregistered firearm....??? Caution!!! What are the odds of the media getting ANY of this right or WANTING to get it right???? Zero, zilch, nada! You are going to see the spin machine at full throttle over this.

From the Fox News article:

Webb told The Richmond Times Dispatch in December that he considers himself a "strong Second Amendment person" but said he does not carry a gun to work.

"I don't carry personally regularly. I shoot regularly. I like to have the option to carry, which is why I keep the permit," he said. "I value the opportunity to be able to protect myself, depending on situations. But no, I don't walk around with a weapon on me all of the time," he told the newspaper.

...things are going to get very noisy at Webb's office very soon.
Yeah, I'm new to gun rights politics, so I've been wondering if this is part of the wave of good news or if Webb will address it and then everyone will forget about it. How many times have we revealed an obvious hypocritical situation without much to show for it? I'm curious.

But by all means, I hope the media picks this up and VA citizens scream about it. It'd be great to have an embarrassed Webb go an extra mile for more gun rights legislation.

Wouldn't the Congressman giving the staffer his gun be a crime in and of itself?
I mean, he left him in possession of it. Its not like he let him look at it then took it back.

This isn't nearly as funny as Ted Kennedy's bodyguard and the machine guns. I think his excuse was that they were getting ready to travel to South America or something. John

"In 1986 Kennedy bodyguard Chuck Stein was arrested in the U.S. Capitol building for carrying an unregistered handgun, two machine guns, and 146 rounds of ammunition. Kennedy attempted to have the charges dropped."

Given the recent firestorm and continuing momentum over the Roanoke Times' posting of the CHP database, I think there will be some SERIOUS screaming in the days ahead.

This shows just how easy it is to run afoul of the law nowdays. No criminal intent (or even intent at all in this case) is required. What a shame.

Jessica Smith, a spokeswoman for Webb. "Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the senator. We are still awaiting facts."

It doesn't say Webb was a marine.

I always like to point out to the anti gunner Democrats I know that Teddy K has killed more people than I have.

Of course the aid will get off. He is a Democrat. If he was a Republican we would have congressional hearings and and then demands from his own party that he resign.

Democrats on the other hand can break any laws as they are the champions of the downtrodden. Regular moder day Robin Hoods.

It could be, but I don't know for sure. A whole host of possible violations come to mind. Webb is a VA CHP holder, but that doesn't allow him to carry in DC, of course.

1. Gun transportation laws violated?
2. Gun possession laws violated?
3. PMSNBC said the gun was "unregistered," but knowing the media, they've got that ALL wrong. They probably meant unregistered to the staffer, who knows?

I'm trying to discover if there are congressional rules allowing possession. If anyone finds anything on this, please post it.

Correct, that particular article doesn't say Webb was a Marine. However Webb was in fact, a Marine, who served in Vietnam, and has written several novels drawing on that experience.

I thought the only way Congressman/Senators could carry was if they were deputized in some way in the US Marshalls service?

What is up with you guys laying into Webb just because he's a Democrat? Are you so blinded by the label he's got that you'll ignore the fact that he's strong on the side of the Second Amendment? Do you all give Giuliani a free pass for his facist anti-gun policies just because he's got that stupid little (R) next to his name?

Oh, right, I forgot, we're on the internet, no possibility of waiting around to see if he does the right thing, just type as fast as your little fingers can fly.

Looking at the article below, one might infer there are NO handgun possession exceptions for Congressman/Senators. The writer seems to imply you can have a handgun if you have a home or apartment in DC, but that is NOT true, of course. Unless.....there really is some "residential" exception for lawmakers.

I see this issue as more US vs. THEM; the PEOPLE vs. the POLITICOS instead of a Republican vs. Democrat issue. The article below is about a Republican who screwed up and he didn't even get a wrist slap.

Gun found in congressman's carry-on bag
Lawmaker detained, but not arrested at airport
From Jeanne Meserve and Ted Barrett
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. congressman was briefly detained at a Kentucky airport Tuesday after authorities found a loaded gun in his bag at a screening checkpoint, authorities said.

Rep. John Hostettler, R-Indiana, "completely forgot" he had the gun in his bag as he prepared to take a US Airways flight to Washington for the first day of work after a two-week recess, a spokesman for the congressman said.

A Homeland Security Department official said Hostettler had a loaded 9 mm Glock pistol in his bag at Louisville International Airport .

The congressman said he did not know the gun was in his bag and apologized, the official said.

Hostettler's spokesman, Michael Jahr, said Transportation Security Administration officials detained but did not arrest the congressman.

"He was pulled aside and questioned," and then was allowed to take a different flight, Jahr said, adding that he didn't know if the gun was confiscated.

The gun is registered to the congressman, but Jahr said Hostettler never brings it to Washington, where handguns are illegal. He does not have a house or apartment in the district, but sleeps in his office.

Hostettler is an avid sportsman and "hunts lots of things and does target practice," Jahr said. "He's been doing a lot to events in the district and may have packed the wrong bag."

Hostettler is seeking his sixth term representing his southwestern Indiana district.

Not ALL of us are doing it. FWIW, I'm a republican, and, yes, I wish the party affiliation argument would die, because I think it is MUCH bigger than party affiliation. This about elites vs. subjects IMO and why congressman are above the law irrespective of party. Congress makes laws ALL THE TIME that exempts them from laws imposed on us. If I'm not mistaken, Congressman pay no FICA taxes when only a few occupations in the country are exempt as well (some teachers and clergy, for example).

There's one law for us, and another for them. LITERALLY. Most laws, from employment discriminiation to workplace safety, have express exemptions preventing their enforcement against the lawmakers. On top of this, you have dramatically different patterns of enforcement. They get caught with a nine on a plane and it's slap on the wrist time. We get caught and it's hard prison time--assuming DHS doesn't kill us. Welcome to the land of the free, boyos.

How does the senator vote in regards to gun legislation?

Webb is a self-proclaimed "Pro-Gun Democrat". He hasn't been in office long enough to actually vote on any gun Legislation.
