Serial number frame and slide matching

I have heard many people mention that they were concerned that if a manufacturer replaced their slide or frame for a warranty issue that the frame and slide would have different serial numbers.

I think I understand that this might decrease the value of a collectors piece but why would it be an issue for a stock service pistol?

the only part of my 9mm that has a serial # is the lower receiver... in fact i dont know of any new guns off the top of my head that put serial #s all over the place like the old WWII guns had... i might be wrong, and if so, someone please correct me

Actually, most of my autoloaders have slides numbered to the frame in some way, and a couple of them (Taurus PT1911 and CZ P-01) have the numbers readily visible.

While it might matter for collectors pieces, if a gun is intended as a shooter, there's no real concern so long as the slide is properly fit to the frame. It's less of a deal if the numbering is done in a non-obvious place (like my Springfield 1911; it has the last 3 digits of the SN on the underside of the slide, you can't see it without disassembly). If it stared me in the face every time I picked up the gun, it might bother me, but it shouldn't make any difference in how it shoots (again, provided parts were properly fit together).

The only number that's actually a legal serial # is the one on the frame.

Serialization legal rules for frames, barrels and slides are different in Europe than the US. At one point they were different for say UK and France, for example. Don't know if they harmonized all the stuff for EU...

Not an issue----you can go buy Glock replacement barrels all day long with a different number on them.

If a manufacturer replaces a frame, they usually number the new one with the old serial number and then destroy the old frame. I don't see why they wouldn't do the same for any other serial numbered parts.

If you get a serial numbered part replaced under warranty the serial number will be replaced as well. That has been my experience. Chief aka Maxx Load

Of all my handguns, only my Beretta Px4 40cal (made in 2006) has the same serial number on the slide, barrel, and frame.
