If they had surprise and firepower, there's not much he probably could have done. There are people who can draw and fire before someone can drop the hammer, but that's a damned rare skill. Discretion better part of valor, and all of that.

I’m certainly not one of the “Great Defenders” of cops but this could easily happen to anyone, cop or otherwise. Noisy, clouds of steam and water mist, concentrating on the task as hand, it wouldn’t be a great feat to get the drop on someone. The thugs were most likely in attack mode before they asked him about being a cop.

But, I certainly wouldn’t want to be this guy having to report for my next shift!!! It will take many months for him to live this down.

this is why they shouldn't give firearms to police.

-Cops are more likely than anyone else to be shot with their own gun.
-If a criminal steals from a cop, now that criminal has another gun to terrorize people with.
-Most cops go their entire career without ever firing a shot on duty, so obviously guns are not needed
-if a cop does shoot someone it normally involves a few weeks to a month on administrative paid leave while the shooting is investigated. Obviously this is a waste of taxpayer dollars to have the cop sitting at home being paid. Take away guns, no more incidents of cops getting involved in shootings, so no worries about paying a cop a month to sit at home.

Sarcasm that was.

Anyways, I suspect the criminals saw their chance. Normally when washing your car, it takes two hands to hold the sprayer, so he was at a great disadvantage and they knew it.

Same with jumping a guy as he walks up to his home with a bag of groceries in each arm.
