I hadn't been shooting since december, and hadn't been shooting with friends since like September. My buddy and I went out today. He had his SKS and his new Ruger 9mm, and I had my FAL and my two handguns.

First off, we had a little oopsie, or at least, I did. I fired at the 100 yard target after mounting the scope on my FAL, and heard the distinctive supersonic crack of the bullet shooting off into the distance.

"Oh, hell" I thought. I had gone over the backstop. Fortunately, there's nothign but dense woods for MILES behind the range, but it scared me pretty good. We cranked the scope all the way down adn still it was far too high.

Then my friend noticed it. I hadn't seated the rear ring properly on the weaver rail. :banghead: Ah, well, at least I'll know to watch for that in future.

The S&W 25-5 is really fun with Corbon's 200 grain self defense hollow points. Zippy! The Blazer plinking stuff was dirty, and little flecks of residue would shoot out of the cylinder gap. Plus, it was anemic; it felt like shooting a .22 out of the big 6" N-Frame. All in all, I'm not going to buy Blazer anymore. My CZ doesn't like it (ejected cases get caught as the slide comes foreward) and it's very dirty anyway.

Fired some Triton .450SMC through my CZ-97. The gun handled it well, but it wouldn't feed well. Cor-Bon 230grain +P wouldn't feed at all in my CZ-97. Those flying trash-can hollow points don't work well with the CZ's steep feed ramp, apparently. Not a lick of trouble with S&B FMJ.

My friend found he needs to buy a sight tool for his SKS; the front sight post needs to be raised to get the weapon zeroed at 100 yards.

His Ruger shot flawlessly, and he's very happy with it.

I realized that I had forgotten how much fun it is just to grab a friend and spend a few hours at the range. I also realized something else; you don't need expensive, fancy guns for this. His SKS is nice. His $350 Ruger is nice. Heck, a pump shotgun and a few old plastic bottles can be quite entertaining.

Good times all around. I find it hard to fathom, sometimes, that there are people out there that actually want to make this illegal. What fools.

Yeah, DSA mount. With Leupold quick-detach rings on a Bushnell 3-9x scope.

The rear ring wasn't seated properly in the mount, causing the scope to be angled downward, bringing my point of aim way up. Certainly glad I found out about this HERE instead of one of those ranges that has something more besides wilderness behind the berms.

Having driven through there last summer is the anything BUT wilderness in the UP? (other than lots of bugs that seemed to come out at night and congregate at the various gas stations along US2) :D .

Greg (actually I enjoyed my time there except when I had to fill up after dark under the only light around for miles.)

"Shooting is fun"- I'll second that!:D

I agree about taking a friend and not needing expensive guns, too. The people that want to make this illegal don't realize this is a hobby and a sport for us just like other activities are for other people.

Sure, there's some civilized areas up here! Um...Marquette and Houghton, mostly. Souix Sault Marie too, and down in Escanaba.

Semi-civilized, maybe. Marquette has NMU on it, making it a little more cosmopolitian than the rest of the UP. (Cosmopolitan meaning anybody besides Apostolic Lutherns of European, Scandanavian, or Finnish descent.) :D

Other than that, it's prettymuch wilderness as far as the eye can see. Now, a LOT of that is either private property or state/federal land, but still. If you ever want to go hiking up here, bring a map and a compass and know how to use them.

Bring a lot of bug spray, too.

Yeah, been there, done that lots of times. About your scope mount, I've found one on a site that interests me, but I don't know if it fits perfectly the SAR-48. Supposed to be an exact copy, but you know how that sometimes goes. I love my rifle, but these old eyes aren't as good as they used to be. Was your cover surplus, or is there somebody other than B-Square making new mounts? I don't really wanna bolt it down to the frame and mark it up, ala B-Square. Besides, they wanted about $160 last time I saw one.
I'm not familiar with DSA, gonna hafta look that up. Here's the one I mentioned.
