I used to kill cayotes with the .22lr, but then I heard a mountain lion a few hundred yards away. I use a 12ga now with 3 1/2 magnum 00Buck. Not exactly quiet, but out to 80yd, you can drop several of cayotes in one shot
At about 2700 fps from my bbl, that is about the same speed as a lot of centerifires are doing. For the coyote, you need a good shot, in the neck, the chest, front or side, not the shoulder, the spine, the ear.
You hit a yote under 100 yds , with it, he will do backflips. I've done it.
The way I see it the best Varmint round around is still the 22-250 so why not use the best?
I guess the .22 Mag and .17 Mag suggestions aren't bad but those rounds are VERY loud for their size. I don't lnow how to explain it but Im sure those who have shot it know what I mean. They are different sounding and are loud rounds.
I have s**t canned lots of yotes with .308, .223, .22, and the .17hmr. I would go with the .17 hmr for your case becouse it is quiet and it hits harder than a .22 imho. If you live in a state that allows NFA get a YHM .308 QD can and an adaptor for your .308 and .223. It is more quiet than a dedicated 223 can on my AR. It sounds like a .22 with a little more bullet noise.- Art
