Why is every place I check out of large quantities of 7.62x39 ammunition? It has been a while since I've purchased this caliber, but I can't find anything other than fairly expensive boxes of 20 rounds and not in great quantity.

I've googled, trying to find sources, and I've typically only found complaints about the availability of this round for the last three years or so.

What is going on? Is there a good place to buy 1000+ rounds of 7.62x39 today?

I load my own, got grief for quite some time from the Wolf shooters at the range...they're not shooting anymore, and I am.
Check all the big companies, AIM, J&G, etc, and hit the gun shows, but be prepared to shell out the bucks.

HK, no there isnt a good place to find bulk ammo. Everybody is out stuffing as much as they can under there beds. When the gun craze dies down you will find tons of Wolf once again

Jeez, I'm really disappointed. This is just silliness, Obama can't ban ammunition, I don't understand all the crazy ammo buying if that is what is causing the shortages.

I was reading further down on here there is a general ammunition shortage, even common pistol calibers at Walmart!

I think we all need to take a deep breath and relax a little bit.

I reload my own 9mm, 45ACP & 12Ga ammo. I'm just not set up to reload this caliber and I don't have any brass. Anything I do have is steel cased that obviously won't reload.

I bought 400 rounds of PPU brass cased boxer primed 7.62x39 for $8.75/box. I'm planning on reloading them in batches of 60 or so.

Walmart seems to be dried up. I think it is because of the way they buy. But yes Obama isnt going to ban ammo many think he is just going to add taxes to it so it cost too much to buy anymore.... This will keep the drug dealers, gangbangers, and etc from buying it! HA HA HA

Panic buying.

Supply and demand.

Either it will get better or it will get worse.

What makes you think Obama can't ban ammo? There have already been discussions of a federal tax of $5 per round. That would just about ban ammo, no?

Well Saxon, we'll just see if that passes, I don't view that as fact, only rumor started by a bunch of ammo sellers trying to drive up demand in a bad economy.

Obama can't ban ammunition,

Well, that is somewhat unclear actually.

There is suspicion an Executive Order could block imports of ammo, effectively killing of the 7.62x39, 7.62x54R and 5.45x39.

No one is certain if he could do that, but it's possible.

"I reload my own 9mm, 45ACP & 12Ga ammo. I'm just not set up to reload this caliber and I don't have any brass. Anything I do have is steel cased that obviously won't reload."

Why won't steel case reload? The only problem I see is with the Berdan primers making it very difficult, or more time consuming at worst. Other than that it should work just fine.

Sure he can ban ammo, don’t believe me? Clinton banned "armor piercing" ammo. If the president can make the CEO of a privately owned business step down he can pass a law about ammo. Sorry to burst your bubble. With a Democratic controlled government and Pelosi in charge, its only a matter of time.

No I do not have a source and I am not going to give you on for my opinion :neener:

Plead with President Obama

He has vast power over our "shortages" to date. CCI can manufacture TONS of rifle primers, so why aren't they doing so? Politics surpasses manufacturing ability. I don't know what else is impeding our ability to purchase WHAT WE NEED to survive. The Soviet Socialistic Republic of America seems at hand, cliffy

MP, I know he did it, but I think he broke a few laws when he forced the ceo of gm to step down, and he will eventually pay for it.

steel case

If you can get past the cases sticking in the dies you're still out of luck unless you are sitting on a stash of berdan primers. They are almost impossible to find and have been for some time.

Well, here's a big part of it. The DoD has a need for 2 billion rounds of ammo a year. ATK, the prime contractor, could deliver 1.4 billion a year. ATK let out a contract to a subcontractor, did some expansion etc, and kicked the number up to about 1.6 bil.

That still left about 400 million rounds short. The DoD then let out some overrun contracts paying (according to several articles I read) 35 cents a round for 5.56.
General Dynamics won that in around 2005 if I remember correctly, but only recently began delivering. GD subcontracted a lot of this out to smaller firms.

35 cents a round is a very high price and it's from a guaranteed customer, Uncle Sam. Smaller ammo and component makers that generally would not have been able to participate in a government job were able to go after this one as suppliers to General Dynamics.

So, component and ammo makers retooled to make 5.56 and cut way back on their production of other calibers and left little to sell to the civilian market.

It's not a conspiracy by anyone to keep primers out of people's hands, it's simple cash flow for the ammo companies.

They have a customer with bottomless pockets wanting to pay absolute top dollar for their product so they are taking advantage of it.

GD is building their own facility in Florida to open in 2010. In the meantime they are subcontracting like mad, throwing lots of money at the problem.

It is possible that after GC finishes it's own production facility in Florida that the smaller companies will be cut back out of the loop.

If that happens they will be looking for customers in a bad way, and that is us. Hopefully we would see availability skyrocket and price decrease drastically if that happens. So, we'll see in 2010 I guess but until then things are going to be tight.

From ATK:

The Army’s “1-2-3-4 acquisition strategy creates a path to acquiring as much as 2.0 billion rounds of small-caliber ammunition annually. The first 1.2 billion rounds of ammunition each year will come from ATK Lake City, followed by an additional 300 million rounds from a second source. The next 300 million rounds increment each year will again come from ATK Lake City and, if the Army needs an additional 200 million rounds, it will be provided by ATK and/or the second source. “This strategy clearly places a priority on procuring ammunition from ATK, said DeYoung.

From Defense Industry Daily, an industry magazine:

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc. in St. Petersburg, FL received a $171.2 million firm-fixed-price contract for Establishment of the Small Caliber Ammunition Second Source Prime Contractor for the Production of 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and .50 Caliber Ammunition. Work will be performed in St. Petersburg, FL and is expected to be complete by Aug. 23, 2010. Bids were solicited via the World Wide Web on Jan. 18, 2005, and two bids were received.

Very simple. The US goobermint is buying up all the imported 7.62x39 to supply to the Iraq and Afghan military and police that they are equipping. Since they are spending your money to do it, they can afford to pay top dollar. You can't compete with spending your own money like the goobermint spends your money, so the ammo goes to the goobermint. Plus the goobermint can threaten to shut down the imports altogether if they don't get what they want. Can you?

Hind tit, sport.

They only thing I see against the import deal is Barry Obama is great friends with the rooskies, and Dems tend to increase overseas trade not cut it.... Bubba and the NAFTA and Free trade with China.... Oh yes thats right it wasnt Bush causing all the jobs to go overseas, hmmm CNN didnt see it that way....

Its around. I just got 1000 rounds. I see its online. You just gotta keep an eye peeled for all your ammo needs at several locations. It will come.

I got in on the ammo buying late and dont have near what I want. However, Im not just buying it all up at once when its there. I leave some for others and my stockpile is still growing.

For 7.63x39 yes. However .223 Wolf steel is boxer primed. At least all I've shot lately is. And I have reloaded it with success. I never had any problem with them sticking in or damaging my dies.

Reloading Wof Steel Cases

It was a law passed by congress that banned "armor piercing" handgun ammo, which killed the cheap steel-core 7.62x39 ammo (considered "handgun" ammo because there were a few hanguns made in that caliber at the time. Clinton didn't do it himself, nor could he- it required a new law to be created.

Most imported russian ammo is lead core, and is uneffected by the AP ban, which targets bullets by the metals they are made of, rather than performance.
