After nearly 16 months of waiting on Uncle Sam to send my tax return I was finally rewarded this week when my check finally cleared the bank, which afforded me the luxury of purchasing a few more Mark IV Ruger magazines. Hunting said magazines down at reasonable prices has been another matter entirely, but I rolled the dice Friday then stopped in to a small LGS to see what might be had.

The counter clerk apologized upon hearing my inquiry, explaining his inventory was stocked with Mark II mags only when lo and behold from behind the one he grabbed sat the last correct magazine in the store marked $23.95 One mental fist pump later I was out the door and pondering whether a trip to the normally overpriced LGS across town might be in order. 1 bird in hand surely was satisfaction enough yet my Ford seemed to disagree as its auto-pilot drove not so coincidentally straight to that second shop.

Making the obligatory lap around the store had me gawking at silencers, finding magazines, then brought me face to face with a pistol which had been on my radar from launch day till now, some several years after being discontinued; SA’s Range Officer Target. Noting a faint scratch I felt could easily buff out I’d have been remiss not to mention, the salesman assured me that a second, unblemished twin sat in back awaiting my approval. I asked to see it, that one had been sold. I asked after a discount, he sadly informed me that he could not discount for anything, but…the manager could! After dropping the tag by $107…odd amount in my head…I signed the 4473 and left smiling.

Not the Elite or a SS model as I had always pictured, but a very respectable 1911 none the less at almost pre-Covid price.

Not horrible fitting for a step up from basic 1911.

I was so excited about shooting it I forgot to snap pics of targets. Trigger pull was a tad heavy compared to the rest of my 1911 stable but once I slowed down it began stacking holes at 15 and 25 yards, all I had time for that morning.

Always a good choice, any Springfield Armory 1911. Looks like a fine specimen of the worthy SA RO. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I think I've owned about ten or twelve Springfield 1911s since around 1989, and never had one that gave me any problems (well, I did have a pre-MilSpec from around 1991 that crunched the case mouths on ejection -- still functioned perfectly -- but after radiusing the ejector tip, tuning the extractor and replacing the recoil spring, became flawless).

You know my motto: When in doubt about what to buy next, buy a 1911. (So, going forward guys, remember, there's no need to start a thread on THR asking what pistol should I buy next?)

Great find on the Range Officer. I recently found one locally & didn't hesitate to buy it. It immediately became my favorite range gun, there are time I'd swear it shoots those scores itself & I'm just along for the ride. :D

Great find, Skylerbone. Like yours, my newly acquired Loaded has unusually good fit and finish.

It seems hard to go wrong with a Springfield 1911

I took a good long stare at a Dan Wesson Valor through the glass, not gonna lie. While they represented an amazing value 10 years ago in a very refined for money spent 1911, I feel they’ve priced themselves out of that market lately. This won’t be my year to join COTEP I guess but I’m very satisfied with what Springfield is sending out.

Skylerbone, I'm happy for you. You could have done a lot worse than a Springfield RO. I have had a Loaded model for years, and along with your RO delivers *alot* of 1911 value for the dollar.

Hallelujah. You actually SHOT it!
There are so many posts: "Looky, looky at my great new gun. I haven't shot it yet but it is great. Maybe a month from next Thursday."

I’ve got a Springfield RO and it’s been outstanding. I don’t think it’s every had a hiccup and it is extremely accurate and solid.

I can't read the name "Springfield" without remembering its anti-2A shenanigans....

I dove into that real-time and concluded that they were as unaware as the rest of us. Much like hiring a PR firm to create branding that damages your reputation with terrible commercials. Years ago I spent the better part of a week moving the Reese family and I could not imagine more upstanding people.

We talked a good bit of shop as Dennis and his wife worked side by side with us, they made meals for the whole crew, and their position on 2A in no way mimicked what’s been suggested by the internet. Understand that while most think of SA as some big corporation filled with stuffy old suits, these are small town midwesterners who grew up with relatives of mine (who also spoke highly of them, having attended public schools with them back when).

I’m not the least bit hesitant to buy or own a Springfield.

Thanks for the info about Springfield Arms and the Reese family. It's nice hearing this from someone who actually knows and has conversed with them rather than relying on 2nd./3rd./4th. hand information off the web.

I know plenty of people that I like personally but whose politics I abhor. I'll take your word for it that the Reeses are nice folks to meet at a backyard BBQ. But there is no denying that they directed their company to hire and pay money to lobbyists who campaigned in favor of restricting 2d Amendment rights for everyone -- they in fact admitted it when the boycott started against them and conveniently threw their corporate agent / lobbyist under the bus in a smarmy youtube "apology." And do you know whether Springfield actually manufactures anything?

I've had the misfortune of a divorce or two and I can tell you this about that (as can anyone else who has employed a lawyer): how they chose to defend you is not your decision to make. You pay for their capability with the understanding of (often) blind trust. The moment you deviate from that agreement you will find yourself an ex-client or doing what SA chose to do, firing their lawyer (lobbyists).

Do they manufacture anything? Yes. In the same way that many modern manufacturers do by using ordered goods such as raw forgings to be finished, heat treated, fitted, and assembled into finished goods.

Now unless we care to open a different thread bemoaning what S&W, Colt, Ruger, Remington, the NRA, and all the rest have done that may be viewed as anti-2A I’d like to keep this thread a bit lighter in tone.

I agree with you that they have moved up in price and are no longer the "value" they once were but they are still the best large production 1911 on the market. IMHO The Range Officer is a decent gun and SA does a good job with it but the DW is a significant step up in terms of quality, refinement fit and finish. Enjoy the RO it should serve you well but if I were you I would keep looking at those DWs. They are the gateway drug to high end 1911s.

People always talk about slide to frame fit like it is the end all be all of 1911 QC. In the end it only accounts for at most 10% of the guns accuracy. It really is more about the barrel fit and lockup that makes a 1911 accurate not how the rails fit the slide. IMHO YMMV
