Couldn't go to the Bay Area shoot, so instead I went down and rented a Springfield Operater and bought 100 rounds of .45ACP. I only shot at 15 yards, but I could keep all the holes together in an area smaller than a fist. The gun had a good trigger. I'm sure it's more accurate than I am. Recoil wasn't bad, neither was muzzle flip. However, I think if I were to buy a 1911, I'd get one without the cheese grater on the front- the standard loaded models are a lot cheaper, and I like the looks better too. Opinions?

My Operator is my home defense gun. I absolutely love that pistol. The addition of the full length dust cover reduces muzzle flip significantly, although I have no trouble shooting 45 (or 10mm for that matter) rapidly while staying on target. The extra steel just makes me that much faster. I hung an M3 on it, and really like the ability to illuminate anything that goes bump in the night. I know some argue against lights but they work for me. Flash illumination gives me a quick look and doesn't destroy my night vision. As for the BG knowing where I am, well he knows where I was just before he went blind.

:D

I am thinking I will need one of the Dan Wessons with rail when in 10mm when they become available. 10mm Operator loaded with Doubletap ammo--now THAT is home defense.

My opinion is if you ain't gonna hang a light on it, there are probably better ways to spend that $1,200... I'm sure the muzzle flip is reduced a but and probably a bit more with a light on it, but it makes holsters an issue and it's a bit heavier.

As for looks, I appreciate the original 1911A1 but I think the TRP Operator has a very professional look to it.

I agree with Cratz2. Don't care for rails on 1911's unless its a dedicated HD gun or for military night use. The Operator's I've handled were very nicely fit and had good triggers, but I don't need the bull barrel or the rail.
